2020.09.18 11:42 MayesZhavvorsi I (20F) have this weird relationship with my ex's little brother (17M)?

I know the title sounds terrifying, but (I hope) it's not that bad as the title suggests?
Anyway, I found my boyfriend over an FPS game, which was completely random. We started online dating and when I later on moved into the city where he lived for uni, we were dating irl.
He introduced me to his family, wonderful people. His mother still wishes me happy bday on social media and even sent me a gift over her daughter (F15), who's still in touch with me and considers me her big sister.
As the paragraph above suggests, we broke up. I found out he cheated over the period of time when we were online dating. He ended up dating my classmate from the same course, who's also a friend of my friend, so we decided to stay on friendly terms not to cause drama.
It's been almost like 7 months since we broke up and I was approached by his younger brother in the bus when I was going to my part-time job for the first time.
We were always in good terms so we ended up chatting. I told him about my new job and said I was nervous. He offered to visit me so I'd feel better and I played along with his suggestion, I genuinely didn't know he would actually come.
He showed up, sat on the bar entire time and talked to me. I ended up treating him to a coffee, because he awkwardly admitted he didn't bring any money with him. After my shift ended, he insisted on going to the store with me and then walking me home.
Since then, this has become our routine. He comes after school, every time I'm there. He stays there until I leave, walks me home and follows me like a puppy every time I have to go somewhere. We even started occasionally playing video games as we both started playing the same one and often talk about it.
I know this is a very weird dynamic, but I was glad that we reconnected as we always had stuff in common and he was very easy to talk to, not to mention a really great person.
The thing is, I think he has feelings for me. Besides the obvious things stated in this post, he sent me some very "curious" messages about 3 days ago, which just confirmed my theory. He was asking if I miss my ex, to which I immediately responded no. Then later that night we were talking about age gaps and he brought up his 18 yo friend that supposedly dates a 24 yo girl. Then he proceeded to ask me if I'd ever date a younger guy.
Here's the thing, he's a minor. It's not illegal as age of consent in my country is 14, but it's still really weird. Not to mention he's my ex's brother which makes this whole situation even worse. I really like him as a person and it's hard not to find him attractive, despite the circumstances, when I have him constantly beaming in my face.
I talked about this with my friends, but none of them were very helpful as one suggested going for it and the other one told me to wait if I feel that uncomfortable with him being a minor, which isn't even the point.
I enjoy his company, but I don't want to lead him on as he clearly wants to take a step further and while it certainly sounds tempting, I think it's very far from being appropriate. What should I do about this situation?

2020.09.18 07:26 anononymous_idiot Long story

I want to start off this story by saying that I’m going to keep my anonymity by changing the names, and specific locations, of what happened on the days of September 13-15th of 2008. To this day, I’ve never shared the full details to avoid being labeled as crazy, but I remember every, SINGLE, detail.
I had just graduated college, and had accepted a position at an engineering firm in June of 2007. I had a hard time finding a job at that time, so I finally took a job in the Midwest in a town I knew nothing about. Everything went pretty well that first year. I was pretty lonely, because it was really my first time ever being away from home. But I loved my job.
Fast forward to summer of 2008. A coworker and I are sent off to inspect a road construction job 200 miles from my new home, and have to live in a hotel all summer. This hotel is in a very small town with probably ~500 people living in it. The only bar in town is right across the street, so that’s where we spent most of our free time.
September rolls around, and all we have left on the job is striping, and a few other small things. The general contractor, we will call him Dan, had pretty much wrapped up his portion of the work, as he’d hired subcontractors to do signing, striping, etc. He tells us that the stripers will be in on Monday, since they don’t work weekends. My coworker and I were excited to hear this because we had been working Monday-Saturday practically all summer. My coworker said he was going home for the weekend to see his GF, but since I was single, I just decided to stay since I really did not want to drive three hours both ways.
At this point in the project I had become pretty friendly with some of the locals. There was a girl my age there who I was casually dating. And most of the older regulars at the bar had started to get to like me, too. I was drinking pretty heavily in those days, so I of course went to the bar on this Friday night. The girl I was seeing could not come, since she had to go see family that weekend. And as was usually the case, I drank WAY too much.
I woke up Saturday to a loud knock on my door. I look at the clock, 6:33 AM. I’m thinking, “what in the hell?”. I get up to answer, and the lady says, “The stripers out on Highway 10 have been calling us ALL morning wondering where you’ve been.” I was SO confused, but was too hungover or tired to think logically. Looking back, how would they know where I’m staying? But I was just kinda in panic rush mode at that point. Of course I didn’t charge my phone or laptop Friday, so those were both dead. I finally get outside and realize my truck is still across the street at the bar. I run over, grab it, and start heading towards the job site. The site is like 45 min from my hotel, but 30 mins into the drive, I realize I forgot the hard copy of my plans in my room, so I had to turn around and drive back. I remember feeling kinda scared that I was late, but I was also pissed, because I was told I had the weekend off.
By the time I get to the job site around 9 AM, I see an older man and a kid about my age there waiting. At this point I’m absolutely exhausted as I didn’t even get the chance to grab a coffee or something. I go and greet them, and something seems, well let’s just say, a little off. The two men looked completely filthy, even for someone working in construction. But they hadn’t done anything yet, so how could that be? They also both had scars all over their bodies, mostly burn scars. The older gentleman than said to me “Man, Dave’s gonna be pissed at you when he finds out how late you were”. In my head I was so confused:
  1. I have no idea who Dave is, I’m assuming he means Dan.
  2. Buddy, I wasn’t even supposed to work today.
He then said, “is that SOB ever going to pay us? He never payed us last time so he’s lucky we are outta work otherwise we wouldn’t be here”. I didn’t really know how to respond to that, I almost half thought he was giving me shit, so I naturally did a quick fake laugh to break the silence. He didn’t laugh, and neither did the other guy. They just stared at me. I then responded with, “well, I’m not really sure because that’s not my job to make sure you get paid”. He looked at me dead in the eyes, and said, “Fine. My names Clyde and this is my boy here, Jim. Next time you see Dave, tell him he owes me, and his wife’s good in bed.” I involuntarily, awkwardly, half nodded and went to paint out where they need to stripe.
After painting out lines for them for about 2 hours, I got in my truck and let them get to work. I was so tired at this point I just turned on the radio and leaned my seat back. I knew at the time that this whole situation was odd, but brushed it off, mainly due to the fact of being completely hungover.
Once they start working around 11 or 12, I start to notice more and more how fucked up this is. The truck they drove could not have been newer than the 70’s, and the equipment they were using was way out dated. I started to get really hungry around 1, and told Clyde I was gonna run to a nearby gas station to get some food. He laughed and said, “There ain’t a food joint within 35 miles of here, why didn’t you just pack your own lunch?”. At this point I’m borderline furious with the dude. I kept my composure, and told him he could call me if he needed anything (forgetting my phone was dead). He looked confused, laughed, and said, “Call you? Well I don’t have a phone out here so how could I call you?”
Now I wasn’t extremely shocked at this point that these people didn’t have phones. Normally I’d be somewhat surprised, but it was 2008 and not everyone had phones yet. Also, these guys looked like they just got done working 15 hours cleaning up sewage. I angrily responded, “Fine, I’ll wait”.
I started to get extremely bored so I got out and started watching them up close. To be fair, they were doing a good job, but moving at a horrifically slow pace. I finally broke my silence around 5 PM. I told Clyde, “look, I wasn’t even told I was supposed to work today. I was told you guys don’t work weekends, so I was just hoping maybe we could call it quits and startup again on Monday? I mean Dan doesn’t even know you’re here right now so he will probably be pleased that you at least have a head start”. Clyde glanced back confusingly, “Dan? Who the hell is Dan?”.
At this point I’m thinking I should just start calling Dan “Dave” to avoid further conversation with this man. Clyde thinks about it for awhile, and says “Yeah, okay. Dave told me to work late, but fuck him anyway.” I breathed a sigh of relief and laughed it off. He interrupted my laugh by saying “yeah, fuck him and I’ll fuck his wife!” He then let out the most TERRIFYING laugh I’ve ever heard, and his son joined him in laughter. At this point I’m pretty freaked and kinda fake laugh with them. But I can’t describe to you how terrifying their laughs sat with me at that moment.
I finally get into my truck, and start writing my notes down from the day, when I was interrupted by Jim at my window. I was shocked because he didn’t say a word all day. I could no longer see Clyde anymore, and their equipment and truck were mysteriously gone. I said “what’s up?” And all he said was, “Dave will never be forgiven for what he did to us. My dad and me will be in heaven watching him burn in hell”. His face then got really pale, and he tilted his head, and gave me a TERRIFYING smirk that I’ll never forget. At this point, I’m absolutely terrified. I roll up my window, without a response, and GTFO of there.
I don’t remember much after that. I woke up absolutely sweating and looked at the clock, 6:33. At first, I thought I was living in the Groundhog Day movie. Than, I thought, “damn, that was by far the most realistic nightmare I’ve ever had”. I got up and realized it wasn’t a dream. My clothes were all laid out from the day, boots covered in white paint, and my laptop was exactly where it was when I took it out to check battery that morning. The rest of my clothes were a mess around my suitcase from being in such a hurry. Finally, I checked outside to find my truck not at the bar, but at the hotel. I guess it was Sunday morning. Or so I thought.
I went down to the lobby to get some breakfast, but nobody was eating breakfast. In fact they weren’t even serving it. I looked outside and the sun was setting, not rising. I checked my phone, which was somehow now charged, and it was 7 PM, not AM. At this point I decide that I was just in such exhaustion, that maybe I blew everything a bit out of proportion today. So I went to the bar to get some food and some drinks.
Once at the bar, I didn’t socialize much. Mostly just ate basically the entire menu and starting getting a buzz going with the drinks. Later in the night, I got drunk enough to ask if anyone knew a striper company with a father and son named Clyde and Jim. The normally lively group all a sudden looked at me like they’d see a ghost. After an extremely long silence, one guy asked, “why?” I said, “well, they did striping today for the job I’m working at, and it was a pretty strange day”. The group now even look MORE confused. Someone finally broke the silence and said, “that’s not funny, kid”. I was confused as hell, and even MORE confused because the bartender cut me off after that. I went home and got some much needed, sleep.
Sunday morning was pretty normal that day, I just sat in bed watching football. I decided around 4 PM to enter my handwritten notes from Saturday into my online work journal. I went to my truck to grab my notebook I wrote them in, and the notebook was gone. Confused, but not even surprised at that point. I knew something was going on, but was too scared to know what. Finally, curiosity got the best of me, so I texted my girlfriend who I’d been seeing that night, and asked her about a Clyde and Jim. She said she wasn’t sure, and told me to ask the guys at the bar, because they know pretty much everyone within 100 miles. I rolled my eyes and just said “okay”.
Nothing freaked me out more than what happened Monday morning. I showed up Monday morning, and Clyde and Jim are nowhere to be found. There was a different crew there, one that actually looked like they belonged in this decade. My coworker was going to be a little late due to the fact that he chose to drive back Monday morning. I show up, and what I saw next left me speechless. Nothing had been striped. Nothing had been painted out. It looked exactly before it did before the 8-9 of work that happened Saturday. Dan was right, the stripers WEREN’T coming until Monday. Who, or WHAT, I saw on Saturday, I don’t know. At least I didn’t, until that night.
The entire day I was in absolute terror and shock. I painted out the stripes, not even needing the plans, because I had JUST done it two days prior. I got in my truck after I finished and my coworker finally shows up. I was too scared to tell him what had happened, so I just said “I’m driving back to the hotel, I don’t feel very good”. He was fine with it and I left. I arrive around 1 PM and go straight to the bar. I walk in, and there’s only a few people there at this hour, but they all get quiet when they see me. I’m trembling at this point, but I muster up the energy to ask “Who is Clyde and his son Jim?” They all again look confused, except the bartender (who we will call Jesse). His eyes start to swell up and he just goes outside for a smoke. One of the regulars, we will call Bob, who had sort of become a friend at this point, pulled me aside and said “how the hell do you know them?” I told him, “they striped for my job on Saturday”. He looked me dead in the eye and said “boy, I’m serious. This isn’t fucking funny and definitely not something to joke about here”. At this point I’m visibly shaking in fear, nearly crying. I have no energy for words, but I can tell bob understands I’m not bullshitting him. He EVEN started to look terrified.
After awhile he shook his head and said the following. “Jesus Christ... okay. Clyde owned a striping business in town called “Clyde and Sons Striping”. Those three worked hard, but barely made ends meet. Jim was about 7 years younger than us, and didn’t really have much for friends. He was awkward and pretty shy. Although, the entire gang used to visit this bar pretty frequently. Clyde’s wife left him after Ben was born, for a man named Dave. Dave was the rich-boy of the town who got handed pretty much everything. He took over his daddy’s construction business in ‘62. Dave routinely would hire Clyde for work, and refuse to pay him out of spite. Spite for knowing, that his wife only left Clyde for his money, not because she actually loved him. Clyde hated Dave. Had plans to even kill him, but he had two boys to take care of. Instead, Clyde started sleeping with his ex-wife while she was married to Dave. When Dave found out, he was irate. He hired Clyde just to get him on his job site. Clyde hesitated due to his past experiences with Dave, but he was about to be run out of business if he didn’t take a job. Dave was surprisingly, very generous. He even payed back all the times he fucked him over for upfront, and then some. And then, all our lives changed. I remember it like it was yesterday. Jesse was supposed to be there with his brother and dad that day, but me, him, and a bunch of buddies went out drinking Friday night and he was too hungover to show up. Dave came to this bar around 9 AM that Saturday, started getting all liquored up and bitching about how much he hated Clyde. Now, everyone in town hated Dave. So everyone kinda tuned him out and had NO idea what he was about to do. He got in his truck around 12 pm, drove to his job on Highway 10, and noticed Clyde and Jim were sitting in the truck eating lunch. He drove into their stationary truck going around 70 mph. Clyde and Jim must’ve survived because the doctors determined they breathed in smoke. They determined they were trapped in and breathed in smoke for around 10 minutes, and burned to death slowly. They never found Dave’s body. The bartender that day was a good friend of Clyde’s. When he found out the news, he drove to the site of the crash that night and shot himself. It was the worst day of all of our lives.”
At this point I’m speechless, and shaking uncontrollably. Bob was tearing up pretty bad by now. Jesse was still outside, I can only guess he was crying too. I gave Bob a hug and went to my hotel and cried. I didn’t even ask Bob what year this happened, but that “kid” couldn’t have been older than me that I “saw” that day. And I remember celebrating Bob’s 65th birthday that summer at the bar. That would mean Jim would’ve been ~58 in ‘08, dating the crash back to the mid 1970’s.
After that job was done, I drove back to my hometown. I didn’t even tell my boss, or anybody. I got fired obviously, but I didn’t care. I landed a job in my hometown that I’m still working for to this day. I’ve never really been “haunted” by this experience, but every mid-September, I always remember the horrifying laugh, and smirk that I witnessed that day.

VOOPOO DRAG S Mod Pod Kit
Hi Reddit readers, In this review i take a look at the DRAG S Mod Pod Kit from Voopoo. The VOOPOO DRAG S Mod Pod Kit was supplied for the purpose of this review by Selina from Fasttech.
https://preview.redd.it/mecfh75g9un51.png?width=1015&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0680788f475373c497399e68292524c279f768f
Introduction
The Pod Mod revolution is entering the end game as they become Mod Pod's, i think the switching of the words is based on the fact a 510 adaptor will become available so normal atty's can be used (but then i have adaptors for half my Pod Mods so nothing new).
I don't have the best relationship with Voopoo but that has nothing to do with how i found the device or what i put in this review which will be solely based on my experience using the Kit.
When it comes to Pod Mods Voopoo saved the use of their premium brand name until coming out with a product they feel worthy of it so we got two simultaneous releases the Drag X and Drag S which is the 2500mAh in-built battery version i review here rather than the 18650 Drag X version.
The Drag S has a luxury build quality and under the hood is the GENE.TT Chip giving incredible fire speed and instant ramp up. The device like many of the Pod Mods is quite a simple Wattage only device which has Smart mode and RBA mode which can also be used just to override the restrictions imposed by Smart Mode plus the Blue screen is just so much nicer.
The other main feature and marketing direction is around the "Original Score Ranking Mode", which was going to give me the opportunity for a rant but although mentioned during the review as many of the devices with this "childish" feature will still be in the market place it does appear Voopoo realised what an own goal it was so now it comes with a different display by default and you need to register online to show age verification to download the point scoring feature. Personally registering for the point scoring system i see as proving you are a child and maybe need to grow up.
The Drag S is slightly smaller than the X version and has a lower 60W top wattage as well as giving the choice of both button fire or draw activation. Primarily this review is to coincide with the release of 4 new coloudesign versions of the Drag S/X, so let's give the Drag S a look!

Aesthetics and Ergonomics
The Drag S comes in cardboard packaging and even has a ribbon which works like a battery ribbon to lift the device with attached pod out of it's compartment. The device is quite heavy and has a Zinc Alloy construction and padded Leather Spine with "DRAG" embossed into it.
All versions of the original colours come with a Gunmetal frame which borrows it's looks from the full sized drag with the Colour of the Spine's Leather being different depending on which option you choose. The original options are Carbon Fiber, Classic, Retro, Mashup, Chestnut, Marsala or Galaxy Blue. I received one of the four new coloudesigns which are the Knight range which all have different frame colours and spines. I received the Silver Knight which has a Union Jack spine design and Silver frame, the new colour design options are Silver Knight, Bronze Knight, Dark Knight or Iron Knight.
The pod including mouthpiece is one single moulding which protrudes almost entirely out the top of the device and is as good as clear for the purpose of seeing your e-liquid. On the face we have a Round concave fire button top then central a colour screen, below the screen lined up vertically we have smaller round navigational buttons followed by a Type C USB port.
The rounded form factor, padded spine and concave fire button makes this ergonomically sound, feeling comfortable in the hand and a real treat to use!

The Pod
The Pod for the Drag S is rounded and one complete, as good as clear moulding including mouthpiece. Most of the pod protrudes out of the device for good visibility of your juice so no issues there.
Looking at it's circular base we have 3 evenly placed strong magnets and a silicone flap kept attached with a metal stud. The flap is easy to lift to pull the bung out revealing a very generous fill port plenty big enough for a quick, mess free fill.
The coil head just gets press fitted into the pod as is the case with most of these pod mod pods!

Fitting The Pod
The Pod Bay looks quite different to other bays i have seen (obviously not including the Drag X). The bottom of the bay only has the round central section visible with the rest of the floor which leads to the airflow slots being obscured by the perimeter having an upper metallic shelve for the pod magnets to attract too. Looking at the bottom of the bay we have a raised central positive and outer raised negative spring loaded contacts which look to have a silicone seal.
The pod snaps into place and fits very securely, the dual negatives and metallic surround shelf design means the pod can be fitted without it needing to be lined up a certain way, good design!

The Coils
Included is 2 different coil heads none of which are pre-installed and both part of the Voopoo PnP range.

The 2 included coil heads are the PnP VM1 0.3ohm mesh coil head rated between 32 - 40w and the other included coil head is the PnP VM5 0.2ohm mesh coil head rated between 40 - 60w.
https://preview.redd.it/rtesdukv9un51.jpg?width=3428&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e0263ea873425329a3d3a5f83df445588758c9b
The Drag S is compatible with the entire Voopoo PnP range which is quite extensive!

The Airflow
The air enters the coil head via it's base and of course the bore of the coil head it'self has some bearing on the draw but the Drag S does have quite a neat system to control how much air gets to the base of the coil head.
On each side of the device we have airflow slots with metallic plates underneath that can slide to close down the openings. The plates are controlled by also having a slot above the spine with adjustment lever. The lever to the far left of the slot is the airflow fully closed and as it is moved to the right the plates slide open until the lever to the far right is fully open. I love the idea and execution apart from the lever although not as crude is like a nail head sticking out which both catches on clothing and can come quite sharp, really wish the idea was kept but a lower profile broader lever was installed.

The Display
This is where my device will differ to earlier reviews as it now as a new display. The Display is Vibrant and has either Red accents if in Smart mode or Blue if in RBA mode.
Top left we have "SMART" or "RBA" depending which mode you are in and top right we have the battery status bar. Then we have the set wattage with either an open or shut Green padlock icon to it's upper right and the unit "W" to it's lower right. Underneath the wattage to the left we have resistance and to the right voltage.
The bottom half of the screen within rectangular accented sections we have vape duration and puff count information. In the upper section we have a vape duration progress bar graph much like a graphic equaliser in appearance and below the vape duration of your last puff given as a digital figure. The lower section gives both your current day puff count and overall puff total.

"Original Score Ranking Mode"
Thankfully this now needs downloading and doesn't come as default as in my opinion it's a childish and pointless feature, it gives rankings dependant on puffs which are called achievements. What were "Voopoo" thinking, they just can't seem to control their urge to market towards the young which does the vaping industry no favours!
Mine still has both a daily and overall puff counter plus a 14 day puff monitoring system for those that do find monitoring their puffs useful, they don't need to be Bronze level or ranked as Iron or Platinum, thanks.

Operating The Device
The Drag S is quite a simple device to use with just two modes which includes a smart wattage option, however unlike the X it has two versions of each mode. The device is the usual 5 clicks of the fire button to turn on and 5 clicks to turn off and it does boot up rather slowly compared to other pod mods i have tested.
Once on, fire and up together locks and unlocks the whole device so while locked the device will not fire, personally i prefer an option to just lock the navigational buttons but the Drag S lacks that option.
Other combination button press features are fire and down together resets your puff counter, both navigational buttons and fire together allows the time to be set and both navigational buttons pressed together displays the 14 day puff monitoring graph.
Three quick presses of the fire button changes between "Smart mode fire button option", "Smart mode with either fire button or auto draw", "RBA mode fire button option" and "RBA with either fire button or auto draw". When in "Smart" mode the device detects the resistance of the coil and limits the wattage to that coil heads upper recommendation, there is no lower limit. "RBA" mode really is just standard variable wattage allowing to adjust right up to the maximum 60w whatever the resistance is. I was at the lower recommendations of the coil heads wattage range so what mode i was in really made no difference but the accents are Red in "Smart" mode and despite being a Forest fan much preferring Blue i had the device in "RBA" mode at all times! The only other thing that needs mentioning is the wattage adjusts in 1w increments which i like because this really isn't suited to MTL style vaping despite there being a couple of MTL coil heads and an RBA available. As you would expect the Drag S has multiple safety protections, a message is displayed on the screen if one kicks in!

Charging
The Drag S has an in-built 2500mAh battery which gets charged via the Type C USB port. The charge rate is 2A so charges very quickly and while charging both a progress bar is displayed and the charge is given as a percentage, the device doesn't support pass-through.

My Experience Using The Drag S Kit And Thoughts!
I will get all the negatives out the way first which to start with is the airflow lever which is like a nail head sticking out, i get it caught on my pocket which also causes it to adjust and it is quite sharp, not lethal granted but feel they could of done a better job.
Also most will want to know how this behaves in regards to any leaking and i tested especially for this. The bottom of the airflow slots and even the lever slot are lined up with the floor of the bay and you don't get any pooling of liquid in the bay, if any leaking occurs it comes out all three slots. I found if the device is used moderately no leaking occurred, so if you are not a chain vaper you shouldn't have any issue but with the e-liquid getting hot through chain vaping then liquid did start escaping through the slots and with this happening if i carried on vaping, what a mess, e-liquid everywhere! P.S also leave a full pod in the device overnight at your own risk as it can look like the photo below and e-juice then comes through the slots when lifting the device up!
https://preview.redd.it/q1c6nfx9aun51.jpg?width=735&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff2f4f15c0772cd59b240a2b9d6a9eeaa2d406cf
My main issue with the S is the Auto Draw which just doesn't work unless the airflow is closed then it worked great but even if just opening by a slither it just didn't work at all. In this situation the fire button worked fine still with plenty of air which actually shows although it's a neat adjustable airflow design it isn't that effective if this still gives a DL vape fully closed.
Needing to remove the pod to fill is another con but far from a deal breaker and overall i like how quick and mess free it fills, the great visibility of the juice inside and how securely it fits in the bay.
Despite my misgivings about the airflow control lever i actually like the design in general and it adjusts to give a good range of DL & SRDL draws but from half open to closed really does nothing!
The overall look, build quality and ergonomics of the device i love and in my opinion it goes to the top of the Pod Mod charts in that regard. I found the supplied coil heads gave above average flavour but not really close to the Freemax Autopod50 coils, but still very good and quite an extensive range are available. I also found the two coil heads included gave plenty of warmth in fact i found i preferred the 0.3ohm coil at just 25w and the 0.2ohm coil head at 38w both under their recommendations.
The biggest pro for the device other than it's build quality and looks is it's performance giving a fantastic reliable vape. I'm sure the fire button has an eye and can see my finger approaching it fires that quickly. What is strange though is this is supposed to have the exact same chip as the Drag X but with the Drag X i noticed a spike in power for the first 0.5seconds of the vape like a set boost which doesn't happen on the Drag S, the Drag S also gives that buzzing in the background when firing which a few pod mods do but i don't detect that on the Drag X so i would be interested if anyone else with both devices have noticed these differences?
After all that for an in-built battery option i really like this device and am quite prepared to overlook any of the issues, that has been helped by as well as testing with the supplied pod and coils i have also been enjoying it with the VXV RDTA pod which gives a more restricted draw and overrides the devices airflow, also when it comes to the auto draw issue, i wouldn't personally use it anyway.
Finally having both Type C USB and a 2A charge rate is a big pro and good charging feedback is given although it doesn't support pass-through!

VOOPOO DRAG S Mod Pod Kit
Hi Reddit readers, In this review i take a look at the DRAG S Mod Pod Kit from Voopoo. The VOOPOO DRAG S Mod Pod Kit was supplied for the purpose of this review by Selina from Fasttech.
https://preview.redd.it/gbzqtlfx7un51.png?width=1015&format=png&auto=webp&s=9bd909a05b3a74feb6bd4361835c7210be77ac4a
Introduction

The coil head just gets press fitted into the pod as is the case with most of these pod mod pods!
https://preview.redd.it/8fq8w0z88un51.jpg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8c06f6a446a7213433e292fa204400e78a92d8e6
___________________________________________________________________
Fitting The Pod
The Pod Bay looks quite different to other bays i have seen (obviously not including the Drag X). The bottom of the bay only has the round central section visible with the rest of the floor which leads to the airflow slots being obscured by the perimeter having an upper metallic shelve for the pod magnets to attract too. Looking at the bottom of the bay we have a raised central positive and outer raised negative spring loaded contacts which look to have a silicone seal.
The pod snaps into place and fits very securely, the dual negatives and metallic surround shelf design means the pod can be fitted without it needing to be lined up a certain way, good design!
https://preview.redd.it/e0vs90ta8un51.jpg?width=735&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6f5f17d2d047943ef00d3d368329f01b2efdd0b
___________________________________________________________________
The Coils
Included is 2 different coil heads none of which are pre-installed and both part of the Voopoo PnP range.
https://preview.redd.it/qk560upc8un51.jpg?width=1014&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f01b5b8f034c2c35cb6965ab44f4f7aac69e44c1
The 2 included coil heads are the PnP VM1 0.3ohm mesh coil head rated between 32 - 40w and the other included coil head is the PnP VM5 0.2ohm mesh coil head rated between 40 - 60w.
https://preview.redd.it/f4977l9e8un51.jpg?width=3428&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51e537025bbaf650ef1afc8c0d183328e6c70eaf

Hi Reddit readers, In this review i take a look at the DRAG S Mod Pod Kit from Voopoo. The VOOPOO DRAG S Mod Pod Kit was supplied for the purpose of this review by Selina from Fasttech.

https://preview.redd.it/3ubh3py96un51.png?width=1015&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9e4e9bc5ca3d2ae75c26eb4818cec04ce591a3f

P.S also leave a full pod in the device overnight at your own risk as it can look like the photo below and e-juice then comes through the slots when lifting the device up!

https://preview.redd.it/e7ei2k877un51.jpg?width=735&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=530a5c4ccc2a690a499c699a113874b6d43d6567

2020.09.18 05:04 kbeltw Fun, weird, and unique M&G

Update: I asked the colleague and he said no, he doesn’t feel it would be right to have money commitment just because we have sex. He doesn’t mind paying for food and drinks in a date. Kind of disappointing. :(
Facts: 1. Met in tinder, I noticed his shoes were so expensive in a photo, google him and found out he is wealthy and well known. (He super liked me) 2. Told him directly I was looking for a SD. He immediately said yes! And we discuss the arrangement. We set up a date in a bar in an luxurious hotel. 3. When I was about to arrive he sent me a text: “don’t mention anything about the arrangement to my colleague, just we met in tinder” I thought it was so weird! And asked is he going to be with us the whole time? He told me no, no threesome he is just taking a beer. 4. I arrived, he introduced me to his colleague 10 years older than him (65), tbh I was sooo nervous and both scanned me from head to toe! Ordered some drinks and started to chill. My SD was all the time on his phone working on an issue. Meanwhile I talked to his colleague a lot and I liked him pretty much. Even more than my SD. 5. I had two cocktails and I decided to go with my SD to a bedroom, said goodbye to his colleague and told him my line ID in case he wants to chat as we flirted all time when my SD wasn’t present. 6. I had intercourse with my SD... it was very average and quick.. he gave me lot of money and left me in the bedroom, he said I can order whatever I want and stay at the hotel all night and order breakfast next morning. I decided to leave. Because of the next point: 7. The colleague texted me and invited me to his place... I accepted took a taxi and got there... omg! Sex was incredible! I stayed overnight, he is so charming and sweet and a pleaser on bed.
I am not really sure if he knows about his friend’s SD thing. Probably he guesses.
So now I would like to ask the “colleague” to be my sugar daddy too. Does that sounds too crazy?
I had a great night with him and I’d like to continue but in an arrangement. I know he has some “friends with benefits” so I’m not sure if he just get them without involving a sugar relationship. Should I ask him? He knew I had sex the same night with my SD and didn’t care. Don’t really know what would be the best way. Or maybe I just ask for things I want to buy online and slowly involve him into sugaring??
Honest comments please.
Btw, I am very sex driven person. I don’t feel bad or regretted for any of the things mentioned above. It was a really weird fun night! I have extra money now as I have a full time and decent paid job. I’m doing it for fun!

2020.09.18 03:04 TexasGulfOil Should I just give up and start fresh next semester?

I am having a very hard time this semester. Some info - I’m a sophomore mechanical engineering student in his 3rd semester.
I am having so much trouble doing work at home. Not to mention having to deal with family since everyone is at home. It’s absolutely worse with the OCD symptoms, I doubt they even know I have OCD - they just call me “mentally retarded”.
I can never participate in online classes because they comment about everything. I never use my mic in online classes because I know they’ll probably listen and make a comment , sometimes a snarky comment - which I can’t stand, it gets on my nerve. They can find an non-issue and make it an issue. My dad nags me, saying that at my age (I am 19), I should be “doing some big Mechatronics project or (insert outlandish academic work)” instead of sitting around like a loser and always compares me to his friends/acquaintance kids - who you’d think are Nobel prize winners they way he describes them. Other than that, everyday it’s nagging, yelling and fighting at home between family members. Seriously, at times it feels like there is not a minute that does by without one of these things happening. Getting help through “office hours” via Zoom University is off the menu.
I feel like I should give up this semester and hopefully things go back to normal when we go back in-person [next semester]? My school has a pass/fail system so I am not dropping these courses. From the looks of it, I really only have to take Cal 2 and Physics 1 as they are pre-requisites for next semester. I can take Engineering and Chemistry again, however I’ll have to go MIA on the group engineering project (which I DON’T want to do - though my group has 18 people including a teacher’s assistant). The syllabus says not to drop the course but to attempt the course and use the pass/fail method instead.
Honestly, I don’t know what to do. It seems like I am digging deeper a hole of excuses which I can’t get out off. I have a schedule and everything to keep track of my assignments - it’s the actual learning part that is an issue.
I am also at risk of getting kicked out of my school’s fixed rate plan because I don’t graduate in 4 years (1 semester late already because pre-cal was a perquisite I had to complete). All my electives for my entire educational career are done though (thanks to college credit from high school). However, that only brings back my course load instead of my graduation date.
My schedule is: Physics 1 Cal 2 Cal 2 Lab Chem 2 (I don’t know why my university requires this for ME students) Chem 2 Lab Engineering Computation (MATLAB)
Thanks

"Daily case counts reflect newly reported cases and may represent cases that were tested in the preceding days, which could significantly impact the count on days when a relatively large number of laboratory reports arrive in one day." SNHD confirmed they are not counting COVID-19 antibody positives into their COVID-19 positive case counts.
Majority of information is pulled from Southern Nevada Health District's COVID-19 dashboard and historical reports.
Our positives have slowed down, our recovery rate continues to rise (85+% range), but our hospitalizations are increasing. Protect our vulnerable and continue to practice good hygiene habits, including wearing a mask to prevent asymptomatic spread as mandated by Governor Sisolak (onus is on businesses, which we want to keep open, but Metro will not enforce it; OSHA is responsible for mask enforcement by fining the business). To report a non-compliant business through the state, call (702) 486-9020 or (775) 688-3700.
Doctors are doing convalescent plasma therapy treatments and are seeking plasma donors to help those in need. One plasma donation can help five patients. Blood donors can get the antibodies testing done for free.
FDA states 144 trials of therapeutics are underway to treat COVID-19. 457 more are in planning stages. None have been approved. Remdesivir and Dexamethaaone are FDA approved for emergency base use.
Nevada was approved for the 24-hour test procedure. FDA has approved a 30-minute and a 5-minute testing procedures. UNLV provides the main COVID-19 testing services. The first at-home testing kit was FDA approved on 5/15.
Testing sites require an appointment; some may need to be scheduled by your primary care physician or another authorized provider.
City Serve coordinates testing sites throughout the valley. Testing is only on Saturdays. Schedule a no-cost test here: https://cityservelv.org/
The antibodies test was approved by the FDA a month ago. UMC, E7 Health and local laboratories are able to conduct antibodies testing. Cost is normally $149+, but your insurance may reimburse you for the test. Check your coverage first. Vitalant/Universal Blood Services will do a free antibody test for any eligible donors.
UMC is able to process 4,000 tests per day. It is encouraged for anyone to be tested. Symptoms are no longer required. Appointment is required.
UMC's testing sites are inside Thomas & Mack Center and Cashman Field Center. They can do 1,200 tests per day, Tues-Sat 8am to 4pm. No symptoms, insurance, or citizenship required for testing. Must schedule an appointment online through UMC's website (www.umcsn.com). A staff member will contact you back to schedule your appointment. According to their reps, there is no limit how often you can get tested. Sites are walk-in, appointment or walk-up. Both sites now use the self-nasal swab test kits.
UMC updates COVID-19 test guidelines:
New guidelines are to save test kits for those exhibiting symptoms.
Expanded drive-thru testing:
See all testing locations on the SNHD website.
Four months ago, the first vaccine was tested. More than 160 vaccine prototypes are being tested. Clinical trials of the vaccine were administered three months ago. Phase 1 & 2 of trial vaccines have completed with positive antibody results. Phase 3 clinical trials started with 30k volunteers; large test size of 3k vaccine test trials in the UK. Africa started their vaccine trials two months ago. Multiple sources stating to expect an FDA approved vaccine by end of the year.
Of the 100+ vaccines submitted, 22 have made the cut to go through testing and final FDA approval phases (5/15 briefing). The front runner vaccine is conducting human trails (Phase 3 aka final stage), completion date in September. AstraZeneca is prepared to produce 2 billion doses once the vaccine is FDA approved.
Government is working with four vaccine manufacturers who are in the final phases of vaccine trials, all prepared for massive vaccine output once FDA approval is given (7/31). Two of the four have in the final review phases with FDA (8/14).
Phase 3 vaccine trials for Vegas has started. Volunteers can call 702-893-8968. Must be 18+. Administered by the Wake Clinical Research Center of Nevada. Source.

If you're looking for a great way to entertain your family, and also teach them about how to properly care for a fish, then fish n' tingle is the perfect gift. These fish toys are extremely cute, and they're going to be enjoyed by everyone in the household. This will make teaching your children about fish fun and help them learn the basic concepts of keeping these beautiful creatures healthy.
The fish n' tingle is not only affordable, but they are fun to give as gifts too. They come in many different colors and sizes, and they're all affordable, making them a great gift. There's a whole set that's available, and includes some plastic eggs and plastic fish with lures and toys for them to play with while the n' tling fish are being prepared.
The toys are small and are shaped like a fish n' tingle fish. One comes with a plastic egg, and another has a fish with lures and toys inside. Another one is shaped as a tingle fish and has a tingle that makes it very easy for kids to catch their own fish. There's also one that looks like a frog and has a few toys on it.
Don't waste any more time finding the right gifts for your children. Fish n' tingle is one of the best, and it's going to be appreciated for years to come. You can find them at your local Wal-mart or pet store. These toys can also be found online, and they are a great way to get your kids involved with the fish loving hobby.
While there are many ways to keep fish alive, keeping them alive and healthy is very important. You should remember that fish can eat almost anything, and if your fish tank gets too full, they will die, and it will be hard to get rid of the dead fish, as well as the toxins and bacteria in their water. It's very important to keep an aquarium up to date on a regular basis, as fish don't like living in water that is too dirty.
When you first set up your fish tank, you should have plenty of clean water and clean fish. This will help avoid having to use ammonia, which is a chemical that can be harmful to fish. Make sure that there is enough water in the tank for your fish to swim around in. If you do have fish that have been stressed out of water, you need to give them lots of freshwater fish food, but not more than that.
A good aquarium filter is very important for keeping your fish healthy. Fish like clean water, so they like the smell of the aquarium filters, and they enjoy eating the live plants. If you have live plants in your tank, you should make sure you put those in as well, to make sure the water remains balanced and clean.
The fish can stay alive for a long time if they are fed properly and kept hydrated. You can do this by providing food and water that contain fish food, which will make it easy to keep the fish healthy. This will keep your fish healthy in the long run. If you have any kind of fish tanks, it is important to keep them in them regularly, because fish will live longer if you know how to care for them properly.
One thing to remember when keeping fish, is that the more fish there are, the slower it will grow. If there are too many fish in the tank, the fish will slow down their growth, and the tank will be more difficult to maintain. In order to avoid this, you can use a floating light to stimulate the growth of the fish. Fish will also look better if there are more fish around them, because they won't all crowd the aquarium.
Another way to keep fish is by making sure you take care of them when you're not home. This can sometimes be difficult, especially if you have children, so it's a good idea to teach them how to take care of the fish. if you have younger children.
If you have a smaller aquarium and only have one or two fish in the tank, the other fish can help feed the fish. There will be a lot less fish waste in the tank, which will make it easier for the other fish to eat it. This can be a good way to save money, and the environment.

A /cscareerquestions College Survival Guide

With our final school year beginning, we were reflecting on how lost and confused we were when we first started university. We made a lot of mistakes (still am) along the way, but we’re in a much better place after learning from them and constantly putting ourselves out there. In hopes of shining some light and helping others, we decided to make a comprehensive guide for university students – based on our knowledge/experiences - on how to start your successful CS Career (or gain the wisdom to avoid CS altogether, more on this later).
rishiss Background: I am a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Software Engineering. I am an incoming Software Engineer at a F100 company (received return offer after interning this summer). Before that, I interned at an R & D center for space, a small cloud company, and a small IT company. I have a 3.65 GPA, won a few awards at startup competitions/hackathons, and remain pretty active in my schools CS organizations.
chaitu65c Background: I’m a 4th year student at UC Irvine majoring in Computer Science. I’m currently a SWE Intern at a Unicorn and just wrapped up my 2nd internship at a Live Streaming Company(you can most likely tell who they are if you browse my history LOL). Before this, I interned at my school’s IT department, did research under a professor, and worked on a few small startups that other UCI students were building. I have a 3.3 GPA, won some awards along rishiss and was pretty active in my school’s CS clubs.
Disclaimer: “But rishiss/ and chaitu65c, you don’t work at a Big N, go to a target CS school, why should I take your advice?” You’re absolutely right; we are, by no means, ‘up there’ like some other folks on this sub. And, you don’t have to take our advice! Simply close this tab and do whatever else you want 😊. Our intent is to guide and prepare uni students for a CS career they enjoy, not work at Big N or get the highest TC. Life is much more than a dick-measuring contest, and the earlier you learn that the better.
We have also created a guide with our own personal advice/stories

Please, take this advice with a grain of salt. we’re not Tony Robinson or Tim Apple, we’re just two random reddit users.

Table of Contents:

This guide is divided into the following sections:

Is CS Right For Me?

The way we see it, there’s 3 types of people pursuing CS.
  1. Those who know CS isn’t for them – They’re in it for the money, to appease their parents, for a minorequirement, some external factor. They hated programming while taking the introductory CS course and just try to get done with their class/degree ASAP.
Advice: The majority of people who fall under this usually burn out quickly, as they aren’t motivated enough to learn the material and to apply themselves. This usually leads to them cheating and getting kicked out of their major, minor, or university altogether. Even if you manage to earn a degree, we've seen a large number of these folks endure a 'pre-mature' mid-life crisis or simply get fired from their jobs. Before you even start this major, you should definitely understand that this isn’t going to be easy, and you do have to put in a lot of effort to succeed. If this isn’t your cup of tea, definitely look into switching into another major you like.
Some folks are really passionate about technology, but don't want to pursue an entire Computer Science major or see themselves as Software Engineers. That's completely ok! Try looking into related majors or minors. We know many students who switched from CS to majors like Informatics, Business Information Management, and Economics and are thriving in tech-related roles like Data Analytics, Product Management, UI/UX Design, and Technical Recruiting. CS is not (and should not be) for everyone, and there is no shame in having the wisdom quit and move on.
  1. Those who don’t know if CS is for them – Where most of the CS community is IMO. These folks (like me, rishiss) are riddled with something called Imposter Syndrome: “the constant feeling of not being good enough or knowing enough to do your job well.”
Advice: For students, really take the time to learn and be open to anything you go through. Try sticking it out until you've taken a Data Structures course, one of the harder, more important courses out there. If you're not understanding the material or just aren't having fun with it, it’s definitely ok to switch majors/careers. Otherwise, CS just might be the career for you! Give it your best shot!
Admittedly, it's hard to provide stronger insight to overcoming Imposter Syndrome, as I am afflicted by it as well. For me, my IS derives from constantly comparing myself to others and confusing inexperience with incompetency. As such, I continue to work and focus on myself and take baby steps towards smaller goals I set out for myself. Knowing that I've put the effort to improve myself by just 1% everyday has made me a lot more confident.
  1. Those who know for a fact CS is for them – The diamonds in the rough. Learning and practicing CS material gives them a euphoric high.
Advice: Broaden your scope and learn new areas of CS! Who knows, you might find another new field that you really want to work in. Other than that, definitely make new friends regardless of whether they’re a CS major or not. Even try pursuing other hobbies like weightlifting, reading, dancing, or even public speaking. Don't limit yourself!

Freshman Year

We recommend not taking more than 3-4 classes in your first quartesemester, as you shouold keep an ample amount of time to go to professional/social events, make new friends and hang out with them, and pursue your interests.
We've seen a lot of freshmen (and upperclassmen) CS folks get cooped up in their dorm rooms playing video games and watching TV. We understand that these two are a passion for many, but please be cautious to not get consumed by them.
You have the privilege of pursuing higher education, making valuable connections/memories, and setting up your CS career in the trajectory you want. This year is the best year to take advantage of all that university has to offer; make the most of it.
One of the best ways to get involved in your school’s/region’s CS community is by joining clubs like ACM and WICS and participating in hackathons (see ‘Hackathon’ section below). Try pursuing internships and positions in these organizations and events as well!
One, major issue we see with freshmen (even upperclassmen) is their ignorance on all the avenues available in the CS Industry. So we’ve tried to narrow it down (not exhaustive).
  1. Cyber Security Engineer
  2. Front-End Web Developer
  3. Backend Web Developer
  4. UI/UX Designer
  5. DevOps/Cloud/Site-Reliability Engineers
  6. Mobile Engineer
  7. QA Engineer
  8. Product Manager
  9. Data Scientist (Machine Learning/AI)
  10. Embedded Software Engineer
  11. Systems Administrator
  12. Database Administrator (The Wizards)
  13. Networking Engineer
  14. Hardware Engineer
  15. OS Developer
  16. Video Game Developer
  17. Solutions Architect/Sales EngineeTechnical Account Manager
As a freshman, definitely take the time and see if you can picture yourself doing any of the listed fields. You should open yourself to all facets of CS and not just the “hot field” like Data Science and Machine Learning. Choosing a field because it’s “exciting” will usually lead to bad results as usually, other people are thinking just like you and will lead to over-saturation.
Our recommendation is to select the top 5 fields that have piqued your interest and experiment with the field. For example, if you are interested in Mobile App Development, try learning how to build an Android app from the ground up. A simple weather app or alarm clock is completely suitable for a first project/prototype. This lets you understand what skills you would need for this field and can serve as a forecast as to what your career would look like.
You should definitely look for an internship. Ignore the people that tell you to wait until you’re a junior, as it’s going to be very hard to get an internship if you don’t have any experience. Common places that most students don’t realize are available are usually IT departments at your school and even research with professors. Researching is highly recommended as you can definitely learn more about a field you can be interested in and if you’re interested in graduate school, that’s going to be a letter of recommendation that you can ask for.
If you’re considered a minority in Computer Science, look into first and second year internship programs as they’re meant to help you succeed. Here’s some programs that come to mind:
Google STEP
Microsoft Explore
Amazon Future Engineer
Uber STARInternhip
Facebook University
Another way to get internships is to research into smaller companies in your area. If the company is very small (<100 employees), consider reaching out to the CEO on LinkedIn. They might be able to help you! Also, take advantage of university recruiting websites like Handshake to see companies that directly hire from your school. More info on how to get an internship in the ‘Searching for an Internship’ section.

Sophomore Year

Now that you have basic programming knowledge, create your own website or GitHub account and start contributing to them with small personal projects. Nobody expects you to make a full-stack MERN project hosted and scaled on AWS at this stage. Focus instead on clean code, learning a framework or two on a language you like, and creating a small, robust feature. Grow from there!
If you weren’t able to find an internship/research opportunity as a freshman, community involvement, projects, and hackathons become especially important, as they are a great way to make you stand out on your resume and to recruiters when you reapply. As you brush up on your skills, apply again, and try your luck out.

Data Structures and Algorithms

In addition, you are most likely to take a Data Structures and Algorithms course this year. Make sure you are focusing on this class and writing good notes; you will need this knowledge when interviewing for internships and full-time jobs in the near future. Here is a link to our DS and A course (in C++) for reference

Junior Year

As a junior, companies are more willing to hire you for an internship, as they are likely to convert you into a full-time employee after graduating. This transition process is much easier than interviewing, and they'll usually offer you a higher compensation package if they want to convert you to a full-time employee. As you now should have knowledge of Data Structures and Algorithms, we highly recommend looking into coding interview prep sites like LeetCode and HackerRank or purchasing a prep book like CTCI or EPI (advanced).
Continue to attend hackathons, remain active in clubs/organizations, and grow your portfolio.
Classes will be much harder; expect the time for completing projects to double and the content covered to be much more difficult. We recommend taking no more than 2-3 upper-division CS courses and balancing your load with 1-2 GE classes. You should not be taking more than 16 units (assuming 4 units per course).
Start to get an idea of what field in CS you would like to pursue. Research what it takes to be successful in that field. You can do so by looking up job postings with that title on LinkedIn and looking at the requested skill set or take a look at Roadmap.sh. If you want to learn more about a related skill set and your school doesn't offer a course, consider picking up a class on udemy.com.

Senior Year

Focus heavily on your senior capstone, project classes, etc. as they're the last thing you can put on your resume before applying for full time. By now, you should have at least 3 polished, working projects on your GitHub that you can easily talk about with your recruiter. Preferably, they're aligned with the CS field you wish to enter.
If you were able to get a return offer from an internship, congrats! However, don’t immediately sign the offer. Once you have an offer, you should still try to interview at companies that you’re interested in by the deadline of the time to accept the offer. A good way of doing this is to reach out to a University recruiter for that company and explain the deadline you have. Usually, they’re really helpful and can potentially help skip interviews that you were supposed to do!
In addition, if your friends were able to intern at places you’re interested in, definitely ask for a referral or to send your resume to their recruiter. This usually reduces the risk of being ghosted by that company and increases your chances of getting hired!
Once you finally sign, definitely take the time to relax and enjoy. Just make sure you pass your classes and stay out of trouble

Classes:

What Classes should I take?

Should Already be Required:

Must Take:

Good to Have

How do I succeed in these classes?

rishiss: You’re more than likely coughing up hundreds, if not thousands, to attend university. It makes no sense to not take full advantage of the course and course staff.
The way I take notes: I learn from examples; I want to enter my code into the IDE to see what happens. I do a three way split; Google Docs on the left, IDE on top right and terminal (to compile, see output, make new file, etc) on bottom left. I note down the date and topic of the lecture and write questions I have in the comments on Docs. I make sure to highlight important information and possible test questions. I even share the link with friends!

In the quarters where I followed the steps above, I never got a grade lower than an A-.

Dealing with Bad Professors

During your time in college, you’re likely going to have at least one bad professor that might make it worse if you have to go to class. If that’s the case, it’s definitely fine to not go to class (as long as it’s not mandatory). However, if you do decide not to go, you must make sure you learn the material, so you won’t be behind on the coursework and studying for tests. In addition, you should be doing something productive on the side. If you don’t go to class and spend the time watching Netflix or playing video games, you’re losing time that you can spend on something that might be fun and can help you in the long run.

You can take Graduate Courses!?

chaitu65c: A highly underutilized set of courses you can take would be graduate courses. Graduate courses are usually very specialized in certain fields. If you were able to take all the undergraduate courses you wanted and still have spare classes to fill out, I'd recommend researching into taking Graduate courses! They’re a good way to build out your specialization and learn new, cool stuff! In addition, if you’re looking for classes to reach the required number of CS courses needed, your CS department might allow you to make the course count towards your degree!

Projects

They're super important.

How do I succeed in class projects?

Personal Projects and your CS Career

rishiss: Projects are your saving grace, especially if you are lacking work experience. They show technical aptitude, willingness to take initiative, and leadership. I’ve seen people with only projects on their resume get positions at the Big N. Projects are good ways to expand your knowledge of CS as the possibilities are endless! It is best to have a variety of projects dealing with a variety of technologies. As such, you can open yourself up to more positions and have more talking points during the interview.
I tend to edit the ‘Project’ Section of my resume with relevant projects and technologies. For instance, if I made a full stack web application and applied to a DevOps organization, I would highlight my AWS, CI/CD, and Terraform experiences more than my React/Node js work.
It is recommend the project is about something that motivates you and are passionate about e.g. video games, movies, books, sports, etc., as it is very easy to give up half way due to stress or lack of motivation/interest.
Like anything else in Computer Science, projects require you to break it down into smaller pieces. Start with the end in mind and draw out the intended architecture/functionalities. Start with what you know and research on the parts you don't know after that. You will be using these skills often in industry for any project/feature planning.
Spending 15-30 minutes a day is all you need to make a successful personal project. Don't make excuses and get coding!

Open Source Contributions

If you’ve ever noticed popular github repositories such as torvalds/linux, these are repositories where people from all over the world can report issues with it and someone can fix it. If you are able to make a contribution to a huge open source repository, it looks really good on your resume.

Hackathons

What are Hackathons?

Hackathons are large scale coding events, where students from around the area come together and collaborate - usually in teams of 4 (but you can go solo or with a partner!) - to build some software. Companies like Amazon, Northrop Grumman, Google, and Twilio sponsor awards related to best use of their technology. After 24 - 48 hours of intensive coding, participants submit their projects, whether it be an Android video game, Chrome Extension, productivity web app, etc. Submissions are shared with the companies and other hackathon organizers, where they select the best projects and award teams with swag like keyboards, gift cards, and even summer internships at their company.
Participating in hackathons are one of the best ways to hone your coding skills, network with companies and other students, and get free comfy T-shirts. It is also one of the best ways to gain industry knowledge, as representatives from these companies and hackathon organizers create numerous workshops and answer any questions you may have. Winning awards at these hackathons are also great resume boosters and talking points during interviews.
The biggest hackathon organizer is Major League Hacking. Visit their website, and you can see all the hackathons (remote or local) they are partnered with. Make to be on the lookout for application release dates from the hackathons and apply early.
With Covid, you may miss out on the free goodies and the in-person networking with students and professionals. However, most hackathons are accepting many more applicants due to it being virtual/remote this year.

What Should I Do At Hacakathons?

Take advantage of the resources available at hackathons. You’re attending a mini CS conference and should be, besides coding, networking with professionals, learning about the different companies, attending workshops, asking technical/non-technical questions to mentors, and getting as much free shit as you can get. Besides T-Shirts, companies give out vouchers to their services, applications to their internship and full-time positions, pillows, notebooks, water bottles, sweaters, and even backpacks.
If you’re looking to get an award, judges at hackathons care a lot about the pitch and the idea rather than the actual execution of the idea. Having an idea beforehand is also helpful, so you can spend your time focusing on the MVP.

Friends and Networking

chaitu65c: I think it’s definitely useful if you have two different friend groups: One dedicated to career and Non-Career Group.
Career Group - When making a friend group dedicated to career, try to be the dumbest person in the group, you’re definitely going to learn a lot from them as you soak up knowledge! Best ways of meeting friends who are career-driven can be through major specific orientation (actually how I met rishiss), courses, major related clubs, etc.
Non-Career Group - While having a group that motivates you for your career is important, it’s also important to have another friend group that can help you relax and to enjoy your time! A really good way to find these friend groups can be anywhere from your hall to General Education courses, social clubs like Circle K, fraternities/ sororities(if that’s your cup of tea) and others!
This is what has worked for us; no need to follow this exact format.

Resume

rishiss: Here are the few take-aways on writing a resume that gets through the ATS.

Searching for Internships

Searching for internships in CS is really different and harder from searching for internships in other professions. CS internship interview processes are often longer and much more technical on what you have learned as a CS major. We've prepped 2-3 months beforehand on CS concepts, whiteboarding, etc.

Timeline

This timeline primarily focuses on large, non-government/defense companies or competitive startups. This also assume you are applying for a summer internship.
August - September: Applications are opened to the public. Make sure to look out for positions and apply early, as most companies admit students on a rolling basis. A site that we used often is Apply.fyi. After applying, you may receive an automated (< 48 hours) invitation to complete an Online Assessment, consisting of multiple choice and/or coding questions about Data Structures, Algorithms, and Run Time Complexity. You will have usually 1-2 weeks to complete the assessment. Please that you may be rejected if you are not able to pass 90% of the questions on the assessment: Please also note that you may be instantly rejected due to things out of your control like years of experience, cancellation of internship, internal corporate issues, and more. Don't take rejections too seriously; just keep applying!
October - November: After passing the resume screen and the OA, you will be contacted by the company's recruiter for a phone screen. During the screen, you will probably be asked a few confirmation questions about your resume, sponsorship, years of experience with X, etc. and minor behavioral questions like what made you apply for this position, what are you pursuing outside of class, etc. You may also receive questions about your CS fundamentals e.g. what is a hashtable, whats the difference between a process and a thread, what is the runtime complexity of sorting a string, etc. As long as you're cool and confident (and not cringe/edgy), this part should be a breeze.
November - Mid January: If you made it through the two Thanos snaps, you will be invited to an onsite “Power-Day,” where interviewees attend 2-4 whiteboard interviews while being grilled on their technical skills and projects. Some companies make applicants go through a panel interview, where a team of 2-5 Software Engineers grill you on technical questions and your resume. You are often pampered with free travel, food, stipends, etc.
December - February: If you were deemed a good fit by the hiring committee, you will be extended an offer to intern at the company during the upcoming summer for 10-12 weeks. Remember, nothing is final until you receive an offer letter in your inbox. Some companies may also place you on a wait-list and offer you a spot if someone were to reject their offer letter.
For government orgs, defense companies, and smaller organizations, the recruiting season starts in February/March and usually ends in April and May. After applying online and passing the resume screen, you will usually be immediately pushed to an on-site interview. Most likely, you will be interviewing with your future boss/co-worker.
Please note that internships are not only offered in the summer, they are provided in the Fall, Winter, and Spring (rare) as well. The competition for these internships is usually lower, and the process usually starts 3-4 months beforehand.

How to get the Interview

Besides following resume tips, make sure to apply to as many places as you can. To get our first internships, we recall applying to approximately 250-300 places before we secured our internship plans for that summer. Also, if you do get ghosted, don’t take it personally, usually, university recruiters often spend so much time reviewing a lot of applications.
Other precautions to take to get noticed are to try attending career fairs if you can, you might be able to get an interview(worst case, free swag!). Other than that, try reaching out to upperclassmen or friends you know that interned and ask for referrals. It’s one of the best ways to get noticed!

What to expect

As part of the interview process, there’s 4 types of interviews that you should make sure you know.
Behavioral Interview: These interviews ask you questions about culture fit such as “Why are you a good candidate” and “Tell me about a time when you ...”
Coding/Technical Interview: These interviews ask you questions similar to what you see on Leetcode and Hackerrank. These interviews are designed to test your Data Structures and Algorithms knowledge.
System Design: System Design involves the interviewer testing your building to design a service/software and test your knowledge of understanding what things to use for the task and how you will integrate them together. You’re definitely not expected to know this and it’s not likely you’re gonna get asked this. Places that could ask you this are Unicorns, Trading Companies and Hedge Funds, and Big Established Companies.
Concurrency/Low Level Interviews: If the company’s biggest product involves low level principles such as networking principles and kernel stuff, there’s a possibility you can get asked this. Places that come to mind are hardware companies and trading firms.
Some companies may adopt only one of these interviews and some may adopt all.

How to Ace the Interview

It’s highly recommended that you look up the interview experiences that other students have faced so that you can potentially filter out companies with red flags and know what questions to expect. Common sources to search up on this would be Reddit (csMajors and cscareerquestions), Jumpstart (Relatively new portal for students), Glassdoor and maybe Blind (Aside from the toxic TC or GTFO culture, they do give good advice on interviews). With that said, here’s some advice we have when you approach each kind of interview we’ve seen.

Advice on Behavioral Interviews

Use the STAR method when describing your experiences. Being quantifiable with the impact of your actions will impress the interviewer.

Advice on Technical Interviews

Begin by reviewing your notes from the Data Structures and Algorithms class. Do not proceed further until you know how to implement these DS and As from scratch with the language of your choice(If you do know python, it’s recommended as there’s a lot of builtin features!). After doing so, we highly recommend a book like CTCI and EPI to gain a review on programming language details and your DS and As. Then, visit sites like LeetCode to practice real questions from major companies. A Facebook Engineer completed 600 LC problems and compiled the most important ones into a list here. During the interview, make sure to talk out loud about possible approaches and tradeoffs before whiteboarding. It is perfectly acceptable (often recommended) to ask the interviewer to ask questions about the problem and get clarification. Once you have an idea in mind and have talked about it with your interviewer, begin whiteboarding. While you talk about the final idea you want to use, write out pseudo code and comments about all the steps you need to implement in order to finish coding your solution. After that, start coding. Make sure to have proper function headers, syntax, spacing, classes/structs, imports, etc. After coding your solution, give a brief explanation and attempt to make it run with less space and in less time (if your solution is not as efficient as you think it can be).

Advice on System Design

These are somewhat hard to approach if you don’t have experience ever doing it. If you do have experience designing and building services in your spare time and as part of your work experience, definitely rely on your experience. An important thing is to definitely ask clarifying questions. There might be hidden requirements you didn’t think about that could drastically change the way you approach the solution.

Advice on Concurrency/Low level

Understand basic principles such as Processes vs Threads (A lot of people don’t know the difference!)TCP vs UDP and how to make an application thread safe. Other than that, it’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with basic OS concepts such as Deadlocks, locks that you can utilize to make an application thread safe, etc.

Searching for Full Time Jobs:

The big bucks.
The process for finding a Full-Time Job is usually very similar to finding an Internship. There’s three main differences are:
  1. Harder Questions. Ex: Google usually asks Leetcode Mediums to Hards + the special Leetcode Hard question that Google asks it’s applicants (they create a new one every year).
  2. More Rounds of Interviewing: For example, Microsoft makes interns do 2 rounds while New Grads do 4 rounds during the onsite part of the process.
  3. Compensation: Interns usually get an hourly rate and, possibly, a housing stipend. New grads, however, are given a yearly salary and, possibly, a sign-on bonus, stocks, and benefits e.g. health insurance, vacation days, etc.
The process for finding a Full-time Job won’t really change as much as finding an internship, but keep in mind that the bar is higher. This is probably the biggest reason why you should look into interning early; by getting an offer at the place you like, you don’t need to go through the daunting process of finding a full-time role.
Get as many offers as you can this time around, so you can negotiate and select the position, company, compensation, and location that works best for you.

Negotiation

Negotiation is a really powerful tool that you can use in the interview process, even as an intern. There’s a lot of guides to negotiation and we recommend Nick Singh’s guide (Look at his LinkedIn and newsletters) for more.

Final Thoughts

University is a probably the most important time of your life and a foundational block of your CS Career. Like any foundation, it must be sturdy and takes a tremendous amount and energy of time to develop. Take advantage of all the resources (like this one) you can get your hands on. Definitely learn from the mistakes people have made and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes.

2020.09.17 21:00 portlane William Gates (Nov. 30, 1925 - Sept. 14, 2020)

William Henry Gates II
Nov. 30, 1925 - Sept. 14, 2020
The Gates family mourns the passing of William H. Gates II, known to many as Bill Sr., who died peacefully at his beach home on Hood Canal Sept. 14, 2020 of Alzheimer's disease. In his 94 years, Bill created a towering legacy as a lawyer, philanthropist, and activist. To his family, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who was an example of what it means to be a model citizen and a profoundly decent man. To many in the community, he was an inspiring role model, trusted advisor, and loyal friend. His sincerity, humor, approachability, and thoughtfulness won him legions of admirers and made him highly effective in his work and his civic and philanthropic endeavors.
Bill was born Nov. 30, 1925 and grew up in the Navy town of Bremerton. His father owned a furniture store and neither of his parents went to high school. Bill went to Bremerton High School and was active in Boy Scouts, where his troop spent three summers building a log cabin from the ground up, and he learned his first lesson about the power of people working toward a common goal.
He completed one year at the University of Washington before reporting for duty in the U.S. Army. He completed officer candidate school and was en route to Japan when it surrendered. He spent a year in war-torn Tokyo, which provided him with one of his first opportunities to consider our shared humanity and its ability to unite people regardless of their backgrounds.
Gates returned to the U.S. to earn an undergraduate degree in 1949 and a law degree the next year. During that time, he gained a lifelong passion for the Husky Nation and met his first wife, Mary Maxwell. Bill and Mary raised two daughters and a son and developed a shared sense of civic duty. Volunteering and philanthropy were nightly topics of conversation around the Gates family dinner table.
Bill and Mary found great joy in nurturing friendships. They were prolific entertainers, and guests could count on meaningful conversation and friendly competition. They and eight other families spent more than 10 summers on Hood Canal at Cheerio resort, where Bill was fondly known as "the mayor." For several years, they held a holiday skating party where Bill, at 6'7", could be found wearing a Santa suit on roller skates. Their bridge club met for nearly 60 years.
Bill began his legal career working in private practice and serving part-time as City Attorney for Bremerton. He joined a Seattle law firm, and after 12 years, formed a new firm with two partners. As managing partner, Gates helped grow the firm and today it is known as K&L Gates, one of the world's largest law firms. His firm was involved early in the region's tech industry, and that involvement expanded over time. Gates retired from the firm, then known as Preston Gates & Ellis, in 1998 after 48 years in practice.
Bill believed in the power of the law to help people and make change for the better. His colleagues admired his integrity, trusted his intelligence, and sought his advice. He engaged in the law's professional associations, including serving as president of the local and state bar associations, holding leadership positions with the American Bar Association, participating in several court commissions, and other posts. Through these associations, he helped create law school scholarships for people of color and an approach to delivering legal services to the poor.
In addition to being one of Seattle's most respected lawyers, Bill became one of the city's most revered civic leaders. He served as an engaged trustee of numerous organizations, including the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, the King County Chamber of Commerce, Planned Parenthood, and United Way of King County. He founded the Technology Alliance and helped boost technology employment in Washington. He chaired the Seattle Public Schools Levy and was a visible advocate for progressive taxation, including initiating a state income tax on the very wealthy, and maintaining an estate tax—reflections of his deep commitment to social and economic equity.
In Showing Up for Life, Bill wrote that "one way to sum up a lifetime quickly is to think of the right words to put on your tombstone." He thought his should read: "He Married Well." Despite the intense sorrow of losing Mary to cancer in 1994, he never took for granted how lucky he was to have nearly five decades with her. And then, after Mary passed, he was astonished to find that he could love fully again, when he met and married Mimi Gardner in 1996. Bill and Mimi spent more than 24 years traveling the world, learning, laughing, enjoying life, and simply being together. Mimi and Bill spent his final months at Hood Canal where they could enjoy beautiful views and time outside.
Bill also had a profound impact on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the people the foundation serves. He, more than anyone else, shaped the values of the foundation. He started the foundation's work in global health, created the Gates Cambridge Scholars Trust (2000), and guided the foundation's major investments in human services, education, and culture in the Pacific Northwest. He was quick to tear up when he saw suffering in the world and never let anyone forget the human beings behind the foundation's strategies. He saw the best in everyone, made everyone feel special, and upheld the foundation motto "All Lives Have Equal Value" in every way possible.
During his lifetime, Bill received innumerable awards including YMCA's A.K. Guy Award, the Seattle King County REALTORS First Citizen Award, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, and the American Bar Association Medal. The University of Washington selected him UW's Alumnus Summa Laude Dignatus in recognition of his service to and insatiable love for the University. He served as UW Regent for 15 years and directed Campaign UW, which raised $2.7 billion through 293,000 donors. A UW Regent resolution saluted Bill as "patriarch of the first family of the University." Even in the later stages of Alzheimer's, Bill could sing the lyrics to "Bow Down to Washington."
In his characteristically humble way, Bill never saw his actions as anything special—simply the right thing to do—though the community is filled with people and organizations who were changed for the better because of his involvement.
The family would like to thank the tremendously loving and caring people, affectionately named "Team Bill," who cared for him in the last years of his life. The quality of his life was greatly enhanced by their presence and consistent provision of hot (very hot) coffee, chocolate brownies, and bowl after bowl of chocolate ice cream.
In addition to Mimi, Bill is survived by his children, Kristianne "Kristi" Blake, William "Bill" H. Gates III and Elizabeth "Libby" MacPhee; their spouses, John Blake, Melinda French Gates, and Nicholas MacPhee; and his grandchildren, Kerry and Sully Blake, Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe Gates, and Emmy, Steve and Mary Armintrout. The family will carry on the traditions that have left a lasting imprint, including matching pajamas at Christmas, time on Hood Canal, and competition and games. His grandchildren will cherish memories of their individual "10-year-old trips" with Poppy and Mimi.
His son, Bill Gates III, once wrote: "The next time someone asks you if you're the real Bill Gates, tell them you're all the things the other one strives to be."
Because of COVID-19 restrictions, the Gates family will hold a memorial service at a later date. To honor Bill's lifetime of service and generosity, donations may be made to Landesa Rural Development Institute, University of Washington – Achievement Scholars Endowed Fund, the YWCA Seattle-King-Snohomish, or to a charity of your choice.

2020.09.17 20:19 GoldenSpamfish Can't run BSOD troubleshooter

Frequent BSODs, BSOD troubleshooter literally cannot be ran
After experienceing a number of BSOD errors, often multiple per day with differing errors, I started troubleshooting. I have scannowed, I have chkdsk ed, I have RAM tested, drivers are up to date, windows is recent. I now hear about a windows feature called "blue screen troubleshooter". Unfortunately for me it doesn't seem to exist on my computer despite me being in windows 10 pro. When accessing troubleshooters via control panel, it doesn't show up. When I search for it in the control panel search bar, it does turn up, but when clicked it throws a "windows online troubleshooting service is disabled" error. To combat this I changed the setting that had it disabled, but it still did not work. The exact file was checked to have the right hex value via gpedit.msc. Does anybody have any idea how I can run this troubleshooter I need so desperately?

2020.09.17 17:29 JakethesnakeABC Should I move in? Asked matched to exchange numbers after four days of messaging?

Title Edit: *Should I move on:
Hey guys, recently started online dating. I matched with this beautiful educated woman on bumble.
She opened with an original personable message. I responded.. then it took her days to get back with me. This is how our exchanges went over 8 days or so... we had three back and forths in over week. In my opinion not enough time to build momentum.
So growing tired of this delay I asked to exchange numbers..and after a couple of days she responded.. I preferred longer conversations before exchanging numbers..
Should I move on?
I want to push back and tell her something like great idea let's exchange numbers, so we can have that long conversation via phone...I'm also thinking maybe she just isn't that interested. I dont understand why be so hesitant to exchange numbers..its just a phone number at worst comes to worst block and done. Also if we had met at a bar we would of exchanged numbers after a brief conversation...

2020.09.17 16:56 JackpotBlake85 Fake online persona for 12 years how do I stop

I’ve been maintaining a fake persona online for the last 12 years... yes 12! I had to make a secondary persona and make them “married” to the main fake persona in an effort to slow down communication with people on the main one... The funny thing about this is that I have taken it so far that people actually THINK they have met w and hung out with this fake persona at night clubs and bars in the past when he (fake persona) was single.
Facebook, email, fake phone number for texting and phone calls, Grindr profile, Scruff, Tinder, photos doctored from real photos of the same random person I’ve chosen over the last 12 years and have used their photos to change the real persons face a bit (which doesn’t ever look like them after photoshop) and use them for this fake persona.
Photos are doctored to make it look like the two of the fake personas are together and have been places together. I mean a full on 12 year Facebook profile that looks legit AF with posts, comments. What started off as a social experiment from constantly being a loner or unpopular with guys never wanting to be my friend or date etc has turned into something beyond my expectations in the gay community. I’d load up Grindr when out and about with this fake persona and people think they actually did chat and have a drink or something at some point. Even the bartenders at this regular bar were too stupid to realize this person and think that they served this fake persona and/or flirted with them after seeing the name pop up on a tab and the next day interacting on Facebook saying “you looked so hot” or making advances.
The fact that a handful of people actually seriously believe they have met this fake person and/or hung out with them when they were out drinking years ago amazes me. They’re even convinced they had interaction!
People will text for advice, gossip, chit chat financial advice even (Bc this fake persona is a financial planner for his job) among other things. Solid 12 year “friendships” exist only through social media ... .. this fake persona lives/works/plays in the same city/state where everyone is from the same metro area online interacts. I (real person) have never met with, interacted with or had any type of friendship or relationship with any of these people NOR are we connected on social media on my real page. I’ve taken fake persona so far and it has gone so far beyond my expectations which was an original experiment to see how vain gay people can be wanting to befriend someone based on looks alone and proved to be true.
Do I continue this or stop it? How would it affect the real people that interacted with this fake persona for 12 years if everything just disappeared?

2020.09.17 10:59 V-UK-86M 33 [M4F] [Anywhere in the UK - preferably Lancaster, Manchester or London] Six foot, decent looking, looking to spend 1 or 2 nights in a hotel with a fellow, special Virgin someone.

Yes, with lasagna and Netflix to fill in the gaps (chocolate cake is a given!)
A bit about me: I have a familiar story a lot of other virgins have - in that I have lived for many years (most of my adult years) in a conservative country (born and schooled partly in the UK, though). I guess I could have gotten into a relationship along the way if I really wanted to and was more hip in the socializing department, but I, at least in a small way, probably felt I had to conduct myself in a certain manner. I can explain how things ended up like this further in private, but the reasons are pretty understandable.
The situation: A few weeks from now, I'll probably have the option of going to some clubs or bars in the UK (if they're open) or using a dating/hookup app, but I'd like to explore the possibility that this moment in my life could be a bit more memorable, a bit more special. I'm looking for a fellow virgin who shares a similar view.
My proposal as it were is to get to know each other a bit online and book a hotel for one or two nights of fun (and awkwardness) if we vibe well enough. (Of course, I'm open to suggestions! A boat on the River Thames you say?)
My appearance: 6 foot, 230ish pounds. I have Punjabi (Probably better to google) ancestry but I'm told there's also some Turkish/Persian/Kurdish/Greek on my mother's side. I've got a fairly decent face, kind of have the Jason Statham look going on upstairs. Sigh, you can be the judge, but I have been complimented a few times on my looks over the years. A bit cringe to write that myself though.
Please note that even if this post becomes old (even a few weeks old) do feel free to PM/DM me. After all, things do fall out. Decisions can change. Red flags may later emerge. Hotels may not have lasagna.
If you are at a loss with what to write initially, a bit about how you've remained a virgin and your appearance (similar to what I've written), would be a nice place to begin.

2020.09.17 06:53 rishiss A /r/cscareerquestions College Survival Guide

2020.09.17 06:23 crusader_blue The Weekly Binge: Prison Playbook - Episodes 7 - 8

Welcome to the third Weekly Binge Discussion of Prison Playbook episodes 7 - 8. On Sunday, we will discuss episodes 9 - 10 of the drama.
So, based on a few comments in the last batch of episodes, I set out to have a little investigation into the doctor-patient confidentiality laws in South Korea and if they line up with their use in Korean dramas...and I wrote a bit too much...ah well. Anywho, the key piece of legislation is the Medical Service Act, which was enacted in 1950 and has since been revised on multiple occasions. Article 19 of the present version covers Confidential Information. This is referenced in the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities for Seoul National University Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in South Korea.
Coming as a surprise to probably no one, South Korea has similar laws to most other countries with regards to medical privacy wherein medical personnel and medical institutions cannot disclose confidential information except where they have consent from the patient or when it's legally necessary, such as for certain criminal investigations etc.
If you want an actual discussion from an expert in the field, I found a Korean talk show called Abnormal Summit which aired on JBTC and featured topics of Korean culture through the eyes of foreigners. Episode 125 featured an emergency physician, Namkoong In who, among other topics, discussed the perceptions and stereotypes of medical professionals in TV dramas. I haven't watched the episode myself but he went into the inaccuracies portrayed in medical dramas, including those surrounding doctor-patient confidentiality.
There does appear to still be some social issues around the privacy laws in spite of the Medical Service Act. One that was mentioned in a few places was the concern that confidential information had been divulged to employers in instances where the company were paying the medical bills of employees. This appears to be one aspect where the rules in this area have been tightened up in recent years and I also saw that there have been amendments to this part of the Act as recently as 2016. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything from the last few years to suggest whether this was an ongoing problem or if these changes had successfully addressed the previous concerns.
Finally, we'll add a 2020 spin to this because earlier this year, there were some real-life medical privacy issues with the Covid-19 alert system in South Korea and the volume of information sent to citizens' phones. I will preface this by saying that South Korea wasn't alone in these kinds of issues, because many countries have had debacles with controlling the release of patient information.
But there was a specific way the alert system in South Korea revealed details about the cases that caused social stigma in communities where these people were easier to identify. This was mainly due to these alerts containing the age and sex of the patient along with where they had been in the recent weeks whilst they were likely contagious (and sometimes where they were likely to have contracted the virus itself). In some instances, this included sexual harassment classes, bars, and motels known for being by-the-hour. Despite the fact that for the most part these people weren't named, there were examples of people familiar with those locations connecting the dots and instances of those people (whether the identity was accurate or not) were then doxxed in online communities. That BBC article linked above also mentions one instance where the Gumi City Mayor released the surname of a patient from his city (population: 427,770), where her age, place of work and involvement in a religious sect had been released.
SCHEDULE:
The upcoming schedule is as follows:
Date of Discussion: Episodes being discussed:
Sun, Sep 20th Prison Playbook 9 - 10
Thu, Sep 24th Prison Playbook 11 - 12 + Nominations
Sun, Sep 27th Prison Playbook 13 - 14 + Voting
Thu, Oct 1st Prison Playbook 15 - 16
WEEKLY BINGE GUIDELINES:
Anyone is welcome to join the Weekly Binge.
Every week we host two discussions (Thursday/Sunday) in which we discuss approximately three hours/two episodes of a selected drama (only two episodes for Prison Playbook due to their 90 min runtime), in total approximately 6 hours/4 episodes per week. We are all from different time zones so there is no need to panic about being late to the party (we do operate on KST as a standard).
Within the frame of the two episodes, you may discuss anything you can think of. Whether it is a one-off post to say you were once sent to prison for kidnapping your favourite kdrama actor, episodic notes, essays on how you have now attained bromance status with your postman as your only connection with the outside world this year, rants about the importance of watching kdramas to pass the time, haikus about screaming out your frustration in a congregation or not trusting the people you are isolating with or even your favourite recipe for quarantined prison wine, the choice is yours.
If you have previously completed the drama, or, got ahead on the binge please be courteous of those who are watching the drama for the first time. When in doubt spoiler tags are your friend.
When we get close to the end of a drama we open up nominations (third last post) for a new drama, those dramas are then short listed by regular members of the Weekly Binge before we open up voting to members of KDRAMA (second last post). Every time we have a new restriction for the type of drama, so that we will not repeat the same type of drama over and over, and so that the Binge will be attractive for different people with different tastes.
Please only vote on drama selection if you plan on joining in watching and discussing the chosen drama with us. Yes, you may love said drama and want us to watch, but, there are other ways to express that love, i.e. posting a review to KDRAMA that will convince others to watch it.

2020.09.17 03:43 GoldenSpamfish Frequent BSODs, BSOD troubleshooter literally cannot be ran

The exact file was checker to have the right hex value via gpedit.msc. Does anybody have any idea how I can run this troubleshooter I need to desperately?

Source.
Remain mindful to give our medical community the ability to focus on those in need of their expertise to survive and combat the virus.

2020.09.17 01:24 toostubborntogiveup 26 [M4F] TX/DFW - Looking for that happily ever after

I still haven't figured out how best to approach online dating, but I figured I'd try something a bit different again. Some needed disclaimers: I'm monogamous. I appreciate you polys trying to share the love, but I'm a greedy bastard and I want all of the love someone has to offer, and I don't wanna share. :P Also, for those looking for a fleeting romance, my heart goes out to you but I get way too attached and I'm not sure I'm capable. I'm aiming for the long haul. The last warning I'll give is that this is a lengthy post I put time into. No TLDR, if you read it and aren't interested, I still appreciate you.
The way I want to approach this on this go around is that I give an idea of what I'm like in a relationship and what my needs are in the relationship. Hopefully this paints a good enough picture there's still magic left to discover about each other in the relationship, but still sets some expectations so you and I aren't disappointed and we don't feel like we're wasting each other's time. I'm out here looking for the real thing, and I'm not really willing to settle.
The first thing you should definitely know, is that I'm quiet. Which sounds entirely contradictory to my next statement: I am also the social butterfly of any party. Never so far as the life of the party, more like the guy that shows up with wild stories that entertain people for hours. However, at home, I'm usually very quiet. The more comfortable I am with you, the less I talk generally. I'm quiet and introspective and I'm constantly worrying about you and what you're thinking. Simply sitting in the same room is comfort enough, and I would much rather do a quiet intimate date than go dancing. Which is not to say I don't like going to loud bars or concerts and dancing, it's nice sometimes, but not my go-to. My idea of a good date is far more casual and, in my opinion, far more romantic. I would rather hit a patio or rooftop bar and drink quietly while talking to you about whatever, with no topic too taboo for us to breach.
The second thing, and this is where I'll draw confusion for sure, I am non-religious, but I genuinely don't care if you are. If church is your thing, I'm supportive, I'll show up if you want me too (just don't ask me to be baptized or participate in some wild ritual). As long as you're not virgin-sacrificers, or MLM junkies, it won't bother me. Seriously though, no MLM.
On a different note, a relationship with me is like me constantly trying to make you faun over me with witty and gushy lines, but never quite having the silver tongue to pull it off. Occasionally, and usually when I'm not putting a ton of effort in which is the frustrating part, I'll catch you off guard with genuine lines that will get an "awww," from.
On the flip side of this, to be transparent, I will say these things to you, make you blush, and then immediately grab your butt. I am in fact a butt man, and.... somewhere along the line it became my way of showing affection. This does not always get a positive reaction. My intentions are only to show affection, but you can see how this action can be easily misinterpreted.
It's also worth mentioning that I, am beyond prissy. The good news is, only when it comes to like 3 things: Wine, water, and house flooring/countertops. Strange list, there's a good explanation for it... I hope. Either way, fun first date conversation.
I'll also mention that I am a huge fish and especially sushi lover. I'd eat it 3 meals a day if I thought it was reasonable. Sadly in Texas, it is not. This means though, that dating a picky eater is difficult for me. I have restaurants picked out from everything from Thai, to Indian, to Mediterranean, and back to bbq. There's almost nothing I won't eat... except cooked spinach.
Some of my favorite hobbies are watching anime, playing an unreasonable amount of games (thanks COVID), and reading. I'm also the worst-reader, I'm slow and when I'm reading I sometimes trail off thinking about how what I'm reading applies to me and end up having to re-read half a page. I also read utter trash (usually romance or fantasy), but damn do I love that trash I read. I also have a ton of conspiracy theories on why Game of Thrones ended in tragedy, and why the writers dropped it. Sharing these hobbies isn't a requirement btw, and like I said I'm usually content just being in the same room (holding hands highly preferred, still not required). I'd argue my favorite hobby though, is coming up with stupid dates that are bound to bring smiles. No spoilers, though.
At the end of the day, I'm just a sappy romantic trying to make life better by spending it with someone important - I just haven't found that person yet.
Which brings me to my needs in a relationship: A lot of people say they're an X-based lover, but it's pretty rare to meet someone who's actually read the book "the 5 love languages," and having done so I'm concrete in my statement that I am equal parts words and touch-based lover. I love being the couple people accuse of being new because we're holding hands years into the relationship. I also will constantly try to touch our feet together at night while sleeping. I'm also adamant about hugging you at the door when you come home from work (I work from home, so this will be an every day thing lol), but what I need is for you to show your affection, when you feel loved, via hugs/kisses, and actually... saying stuff. Tell me you love me first, compliments, etc.
I also would like kids one day, preferably in the next 8 years which is a long-term goal, but a goal nonetheless. Which totally conflicts with my appreciation of some of the finer things in life, like good wine, great food, and un-damaged furniture, but even still, I'd rather have a family.
Last but not least, physical attraction is important, so here's a bit about me:
I'm 5'10 (and I don't care how tall you are. 4'11 or 6'7, don't care.) Muscular, and leaning. I'm a reverse-software engineer which is revered among software engineers, because no one wants my job but it is highly appreciated. I have a clean-shaven look usually because my facial hair is jet-black, but my head hair is blonde af, which creates a really not-well-executed contrast.... so I shave.

2020.09.16 19:11 DamnDam Meta: Stanford Rape Victim's Statement

Your honor,
If it is all right, for the majority of this statement I would like to address the defendant directly.
You don’t know me, but you’ve been inside me, and that’s why we’re here today.
On January 17th, 2015, it was a quiet Saturday night at home. My dad made some dinner and I sat at the table with my younger sister who was visiting for the weekend. I was working full time and it was approaching my bed time. I planned to stay at home by myself, watch some TV and read, while she went to a party with her friends. Then, I decided it was my only night with her, I had nothing better to do, so why not, there’s a dumb party ten minutes from my house, I would go, dance weird like a fool, and embarrass my younger sister. On the way there, I joked that undergrad guys would have braces. My sister teased me for wearing a beige cardigan to a frat party like a librarian. I called myself “big mama”, because I knew I’d be the oldest one there. I made silly faces, let my guard down, and drank liquor too fast not factoring in that my tolerance had significantly lowered since college.
The next thing I remember I was in a gurney in a hallway. I had dried blood and bandages on the backs of my hands and elbow. I thought maybe I had fallen and was in an admin office on campus. I was very calm and wondering where my sister was. A deputy explained I had been assaulted. I still remained calm, assured he was speaking to the wrong person. I knew no one at this party. When I was finally allowed to use the restroom, I pulled down the hospital pants they had given me, went to pull down my underwear, and felt nothing. I still remember the feeling of my hands touching my skin and grabbing nothing. I looked down and there was nothing. The thin piece of fabric, the only thing between my vagina and anything else, was missing and everything inside me was silenced. I still don’t have words for that feeling. In order to keep breathing, I thought maybe the policemen used scissors to cut them off for evidence.
Then, I felt pine needles scratching the back of my neck and started pulling them out my hair. I thought maybe, the pine needles had fallen from a tree onto my head. My brain was talking my gut into not collapsing. Because my gut was saying, help me, help me.
I shuffled from room to room with a blanket wrapped around me, pine needles trailing behind me, I left a little pile in every room I sat in. I was asked to sign papers that said “Rape Victim” and I thought something has really happened. My clothes were confiscated and I stood naked while the nurses held a ruler to various abrasions on my body and photographed them. The three of us worked to comb the pine needles out of my hair, six hands to fill one paper bag. To calm me down, they said it’s just the flora and fauna, flora and fauna. I had multiple swabs inserted into my vagina and anus, needles for shots, pills, had a nikon pointed right into my spread legs. I had long, pointed beaks inside me and had my vagina smeared with cold, blue paint to check for abrasions.
After a few hours of this, they let me shower. I stood there examining my body beneath the stream of water and decided, I don’t want my body anymore. I was terrified of it, I didn’t know what had been in it, if it had been contaminated, who had touched it. I wanted to take off my body like a jacket and leave it at the hospital with everything else.
On that morning, all that I was told was that I had been found behind a dumpster, potentially penetrated by a stranger, and that I should get retested for HIV because results don’t always show up immediately. But for now, I should go home and get back to my normal life. Imagine stepping back into the world with only that information. They gave me huge hugs, and then I walked out of the hospital into the parking lot wearing the new sweatshirt and sweatpants they provided me, as they had only allowed me to keep my necklace and shoes.
My sister picked me up, face wet from tears and contorted in anguish. Instinctively and immediately, I wanted to take away her pain. I smiled at her, I told her to look at me, I’m right here, I’m okay, everything’s okay, I’m right here. My hair is washed and clean, they gave me the strangest shampoo, calm down, and look at me. Look at these funny new sweatpants and sweatshirt, I look like a P.E. teacher, let’s go home, let’s eat something. She did not know that beneath my sweats, I had scratches and bandages on my skin, my vagina was sore and had become a strange, dark color from all the prodding, my underwear was missing, and I felt too empty to continue to speak. That I was also afraid, that I was also devastated. That day we drove home and for hours my sister held me.
My boyfriend did not know what happened, but called that day and said, “I was really worried about you last night, you scared me, did you make it home okay?” I was horrified. That’s when I learned I had called him that night in my blackout, left an incomprehensible voicemail, that we had also spoken on the phone, but I was slurring so heavily he was scared for me, that he repeatedly told me to go find my sister. Again, he asked me, “What happened last night? Did you make it home okay?” I said yes, and hung up to cry.
I was not ready to tell my boyfriend or parents that actually, I may have been raped behind a dumpster, but I don’t know by who or when or how. If I told them, I would see the fear on their faces, and mine would multiply by tenfold, so instead I pretended the whole thing wasn’t real.
I tried to push it out of my mind, but it was so heavy I didn’t talk, I didn’t eat, I didn’t sleep, I didn’t interact with anyone. After work, I would drive to a secluded place to scream. I didn’t talk, I didn’t eat, I didn’t sleep, I didn’t interact with anyone, and I became isolated from the ones I loved most. For one week after the incident, I didn’t get any calls or updates about that night or what happened to me. The only symbol that proved that it hadn’t just been a bad dream, was the sweatshirt from the hospital in my drawer.
One day, I was at work, scrolling through the news on my phone, and came across an article. In it, I read and learned for the first time about how I was found unconscious, with my hair disheveled, long necklace wrapped around my neck, bra pulled out of my dress, dress pulled off over my shoulders and pulled up above my waist, that I was butt naked all the way down to my boots, legs spread apart, and had been penetrated by a foreign object by someone I did not recognize. This was how I learned what happened to me, sitting at my desk reading the news at work. I learned what happened to me the same time everyone else in the world learned what happened to me. That’s when the pine needles in my hair made sense, they didn’t fall from a tree. He had taken off my underwear, his fingers had been inside of me. I don’t even know this person. I still don’t know this person. When I read about me like this, I said, this can’t be me.
This can’t be me. I could not digest or accept any of this information. I could not imagine my family having to read about this online. I kept reading. In the next paragraph, I read something that I will never forgive; I read that according to him, I liked it. I liked it. Again, I do not have words for these feelings.
At the bottom of the article, after I learned about the graphic details of my own sexual assault, the article listed his swimming times. She was found breathing, unresponsive with her underwear six inches away from her bare stomach curled in fetal position. By the way, he’s really good at swimming. Throw in my mile time if that’s what we’re doing. I’m good at cooking, put that in there, I think the end is where you list your extra-curriculars to cancel out all the sickening things that’ve happened.
The night the news came out I sat my parents down and told them that I had been assaulted, to not look at the news because it’s upsetting, just know that I’m okay, I’m right here, and I’m okay. But halfway through telling them, my mom had to hold me because I could no longer stand up. I was not okay.
The night after it happened, he said he didn’t know my name, said he wouldn’t be able to identify my face in a lineup, didn’t mention any dialogue between us, no words, only dancing and kissing. Dancing is a cute term; was it snapping fingers and twirling dancing, or just bodies grinding up against each other in a crowded room? I wonder if kissing was just faces sloppily pressed up against each other? When the detective asked if he had planned on taking me back to his dorm, he said no. When the detective asked how we ended up behind the dumpster, he said he didn’t know. He admitted to kissing other girls at that party, one of whom was my own sister who pushed him away. He admitted to wanting to hook up with someone. I was the wounded antelope of the herd, completely alone and vulnerable, physically unable to fend for myself, and he chose me. Sometimes I think, if I hadn’t gone, then this never would’ve happened. But then I realized, it would have happened, just to somebody else. You were about to enter four years of access to drunk girls and parties, and if this is the foot you started off on, then it is right you did not continue.
The night after it happened, he said he thought I liked it because I rubbed his back. A back rub. Never mentioned me voicing consent, never mentioned us speaking, a back rub.
One more time, in public news, I learned that my ass and vagina were completely exposed outside, my breasts had been groped, fingers had been jabbed inside me along with pine needles and debris, my bare skin and head had been rubbing against the ground behind a dumpster, while an erect freshman was humping my half naked, unconscious body. But I don’t remember, so how do I prove I didn’t like it.
I thought there’s no way this is going to trial; there were witnesses, there was dirt in my body, he ran but was caught. He’s going to settle, formally apologize, and we will both move on. Instead, I was told he hired a powerful attorney, expert witnesses, private investigators who were going to try and find details about my personal life to use against me, find loopholes in my story to invalidate me and my sister, in order to show that this sexual assault was in fact a misunderstanding. That he was going to go to any length to convince the world he had simply been confused.
I was not only told that I was assaulted, I was told that because I couldn’t remember, I technically could not prove it was unwanted. And that distorted me, damaged me, almost broke me. It is the saddest type of confusion to be told I was assaulted and nearly raped, blatantly out in the open, but we don’t know if it counts as assault yet. I had to fight for an entire year to make it clear that there was something wrong with this situation.
When I was told to be prepared in case we didn’t win, I said, I can’t prepare for that. He was guilty the minute I woke up. No one can talk me out of the hurt he caused me. Worst of all, I was warned, because he now knows you don’t remember, he is going to get to write the script. He can say whatever he wants and no one can contest it. I had no power, I had no voice, I was defenseless. My memory loss would be used against me. My testimony was weak, was incomplete, and I was made to believe that perhaps, I am not enough to win this. That’s so damaging. His attorney constantly reminded the jury, the only one we can believe is Brock, because she doesn’t remember. That helplessness was traumatizing.
Instead of taking time to heal, I was taking time to recall the night in excruciating detail, in order to prepare for the attorney’s questions that would be invasive, aggressive, and designed to steer me off course, to contradict myself, my sister, phrased in ways to manipulate my answers. Instead of his attorney saying, Did you notice any abrasions? He said, You didn’t notice any abrasions, right? This was a game of strategy, as if I could be tricked out of my own worth. The sexual assault had been so clear, but instead, here I was at the trial, answering question like:
How old are you? How much do you weigh? What did you eat that day? Well what did you have for dinner? Who made dinner? Did you drink with dinner? No, not even water? When did you drink? How much did you drink? What container did you drink out of? Who gave you the drink? How much do you usually drink? Who dropped you off at this party? At what time? But where exactly? What were you wearing? Why were you going to this party? What’d you do when you got there? Are you sure you did that? But what time did you do that? What does this text mean? Who were you texting? When did you urinate? Where did you urinate? With whom did you urinate outside? Was your phone on silent when your sister called? Do you remember silencing it? Really because on page 53 I’d like to point out that you said it was set to ring. Did you drink in college? You said you were a party animal? How many times did you black out? Did you party at frats? Are you serious with your boyfriend? Are you sexually active with him? When did you start dating? Would you ever cheat? Do you have a history of cheating? What do you mean when you said you wanted to reward him? Do you remember what time you woke up? Were you wearing your cardigan? What color was your cardigan? Do you remember any more from that night? No? Okay, we’ll let Brock fill it in.
I was pummeled with narrowed, pointed questions that dissected my personal life, love life, past life, family life, inane questions, accumulating trivial details to try and find an excuse for this guy who didn’t even take the time to ask me for my name, who had me naked a handful of minutes after seeing me. After a physical assault, I was assaulted with questions designed to attack me, to say see, her facts don’t line up, she’s out of her mind, she’s practically an alcoholic, she probably wanted to hook up, he’s like an athlete right, they were both drunk, whatever, the hospital stuff she remembers is after the fact, why take it into account, Brock has a lot at stake so he’s having a really hard time right now.
And then it came time for him to testify. This is where I became revictimized. I want to remind you, the night after it happened he said he never planned to take me back to his dorm. He said he didn’t know why we were behind a dumpster. He got up to leave because he wasn’t feeling well when he was suddenly chased and attacked. Then he learned I could not remember.
So one year later, as predicted, a new dialogue emerged. Brock had a strange new story, almost sounded like a poorly written young adult novel with kissing and dancing and hand holding and lovingly tumbling onto the ground, and most importantly in this new story, there was suddenly consent. One year after the incident, he remembered, oh yeah, by the way she actually said yes, to everything, so.
He said he had asked if I wanted to dance. Apparently I said yes. He’d asked if I wanted to go to his dorm, I said yes. Then he asked if he could finger me and I said yes. Most guys don’t ask, Can I finger you? Usually there’s a natural progression of things, unfolding consensually, not a Q and A. But apparently I granted full permission. He’s in the clear.
Even in this story, there’s barely any dialogue; I only said a total of three words before he had me half naked on the ground. I have never been penetrated after three words. He didn’t claim to hear me speak one full sentence that night, so in the news when it says we “met”, I’m not sure I would go so far as to say that. Future reference, if you are confused about whether a girl can consent, see if she can speak an entire sentence. You couldn’t even do that. Just one coherent string of words. If she can’t do that, then no. Don’t touch her, just no. Not maybe, just no. Where was the confusion? This is common sense, human decency.
According to him, the only reason we were on the ground was because I fell down. Note; if a girl falls help her get back up. If she is too drunk to even walk and falls, do not mount her, hump her, take off her underwear, and insert your hand inside her vagina. If a girl falls help her up. If she is wearing a cardigan over her dress don’t take it off so that you can touch her breasts. Maybe she is cold, maybe that’s why she wore the cardigan. If her bare ass and legs are rubbing the pinecones and needles, while the weight of you pushes into her, get off her.
Next in the story, two people approached you. You ran because you said you felt scared. I argue that you were scared because you’d be caught, not because you were scared of two terrifying Swedish grad students. The idea that you thought you were being attacked out of the blue was ludicrous. That it had nothing to do with you being on top my unconscious body. You were caught red handed, with no explanation. When they tackled you why didn’t [you] say, “Stop! Everything’s okay, go ask her, she’s right over there, she’ll tell you.” I mean you had just asked for my consent, right? I was awake, right? When the policeman arrived and interviewed the evil Swede who tackled you, he was crying so hard he couldn’t speak because of what he’d seen. Also, if you really did think they were dangerous, you just abandoned a half-naked girl to run and save yourself. No matter which way you frame it, it doesn’t make sense.
Your attorney has repeatedly pointed out, well we don’t know exactly when she became unconscious. And you’re right, maybe I was still fluttering my eyes and wasn’t completely limp yet, fine. His guilt did not depend on him knowing the exact second that I became unconscious, that is never what this was about. I was slurring, too drunk to consent way before I was on the ground. I should have never been touched in the first place. Brock stated, “At no time did I see that she was not responding. If at any time I thought she was not responding, I would have stopped immediately.” Here’s the thing; if your plan was to stop only when I was literally unresponsive, then you still do not understand. You didn’t even stop when I was unconscious anyway! Someone else stopped you. Two guys on bikes noticed I wasn’t moving in the dark and had to tackle you. How did you not notice while on top of me?
You said, you would have stopped and gotten help. You say that, but I want you to explain how you would’ve helped me, step by step, walk me through this. I want to know, if those evil Swedes had not found me, how the night would have played out. I am asking you; Would you have pulled my underwear back on over my boots? Untangled the necklace wrapped around my neck? Closed my legs, covered me? Tucked my bra back into my dress? Would you have helped me pick the needles from my hair? Asked if the abrasions on my neck and bottom hurt? Would you then go find a friend and say, Will you help me get her somewhere warm and soft? I don’t sleep when I think about the way it could have gone if the Swedes had never come. What would have happened to me? That’s what you’ll never have a good answer for, that’s what you can’t explain even after a year.
To sit under oath and inform all of us, that yes I wanted it, yes I permitted it, and that you are the true victim attacked by guys for reasons unknown to you is sick, is demented, is selfish, is stupid. It shows that you were willing to go to any length, to discredit me, invalidate me, and explain why it was okay to hurt me. You tried unyieldingly to save yourself, your reputation, at my expense.
My family had to see pictures of my head strapped to a gurney full of pine needles, of my body in the dirt with my eyes closed, dress hiked up, limbs limp in the dark. And then even after that, my family had to listen to your attorney say, the pictures were after the fact, we can dismiss them. To say, yes her nurse confirmed there was redness and abrasions inside her, but that’s what happens when you finger someone, and he’s already admitted to that. To listen to him use my own sister against me. To listen him attempt to paint of a picture of me, the seductive party animal, as if somehow that would make it so that I had this coming for me. To listen to him say I sounded drunk on the phone because I’m silly and that’s my goofy way of speaking. To point out that in the voicemail, I said I would reward my boyfriend and we all know what I was thinking. I assure you my rewards program is non-transferable, especially to any nameless man that approaches me.
The point is, this is everything my family and I endured during the trial. This is everything I had to sit through silently, taking it, while he shaped the evening. It is enough to be suffering. It is another thing to have someone ruthlessly working to diminish the gravity and validity of this suffering. But in the end, his unsupported statements and his attorney’s twisted logic fooled no one. The truth won, the truth spoke for itself.
You are guilty. Twelve jurors convicted you guilty of three felony counts beyond reasonable doubt, that’s twelve votes per count, thirty-six yeses confirming guilt, that’s one hundred percent, unanimous guilt. And I thought finally it is over, finally he will own up to what he did, truly apologize, we will both move on and get better. Then I read your statement.
If you are hoping that one of my organs will implode from anger and I will die, I’m almost there. You are very close. Assault is not an accident. This is not a story of another drunk college hookup with poor decision making. Somehow, you still don’t get it. Somehow, you still sound confused.
I will now take this opportunity to read portions of the defendant’s statement and respond to them.
You said, “Being drunk I just couldn’t make the best decisions and neither could she.”
Alcohol is not an excuse. Is it a factor? Yes. But alcohol was not the one who stripped me, fingered me, had my head dragging against the ground, with me almost fully naked. Having too much to drink was an amateur mistake that I admit to, but it is not criminal. Everyone in this room has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much, or knows someone close to them who has had a night where they have regretted drinking too much. Regretting drinking is not the same as regretting sexual assault. We were both drunk, the difference is I did not take off your pants and underwear, touch you inappropriately, and run away. That’s the difference.
You said, If I wanted to get to know her, I should have asked for her number, rather than asking her to go back to my room.
I’m not mad because you didn’t ask for my number. Even if you did know me, I would not want [to] be in this situation. My own boyfriend knows me, but if he asked to finger me behind a dumpster, I would slap him. No girl wants to be in this situation. Nobody. I don’t care if you know their phone number or not.
You said, I stupidly thought it was okay for me to do what everyone around me was doing, which was drinking. I was wrong.
Again, you were not wrong for drinking. Everyone around you was not sexually assaulting me. You were wrong for doing what nobody else was doing, which was pushing your erect dick in your pants against my naked, defenseless body concealed in a dark area, where partygoers could no longer see or protect me, and own my sister could not find me. Sipping fireball is not your crime. Peeling off and discarding my underwear like a candy wrapper to insert your finger into my body, is where you went wrong. Why am I still explaining this.
You said, During the trial I didn’t want to victimize her at all. That was just my attorney and his way of approaching the case.
Your attorney is not your scapegoat, he represents you. Did your attorney say some incredulously infuriating, degrading things? Absolutely. He said you had an erection, because it was cold. I have no words.
You said, you are in the process of establishing a program for high school and college students in which you speak about your experience to “speak out against the college campus drinking culture and the sexual promiscuity that goes along with that.”
Speak out against campus drinking culture. That’s what we’re speaking out against? You think that’s what I’ve spent the past year fighting for? Not awareness about campus sexual assault, or rape, or learning to recognize consent. Campus drinking culture. Down with Jack Daniels. Down with Skyy Vodka. If you want talk to high school kids about drinking go to an AA meeting. You realize, having a drinking problem is different than drinking and then forcefully trying to have sex with someone? Show men how to respect women, not how to drink less.
Drinking culture and the sexual promiscuity that goes along with that. Goes along with that, like a side effect, like fries on the side of your order. Where does promiscuity even come into play? I don’t see headlines that read, Brock Turner, Guilty of drinking too much and the sexual promiscuity that goes along with that. Campus [Sexual] Assault. There’s your first powerpoint slide.
I have done enough explaining. You do not get to shrug your shoulders and be confused anymore. You do not get to pretend that there were no red flags. You do not get to not know why you ran. You have been convicted of violating me with malicious intent, and all you can admit to is consuming alcohol. Do not talk about the sad way your life was upturned because alcohol made you do bad things. Figure out how to take responsibility for your own conduct.
Lastly you said, I want to show people that one night of drinking can ruin a life.
Ruin a life, one life, yours, you forgot about mine. Let me rephrase for you, I want to show people that one night of drinking can ruin two lives. You and me. You are the cause, I am the effect. You have dragged me through this hell with you, dipped me back into that night again and again. You knocked down both our towers, I collapsed at the same time you did. Your damage was concrete; stripped of titles, degrees, enrollment. My damage was internal, unseen, I carry it with me. You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today.
See one thing we have in common is that we were both unable to get up in the morning. I am no stranger to suffering. You made me a victim. In newspapers my name was “unconscious intoxicated woman”, ten syllables, and nothing more than that. For a while, I believed that that was all I was. I had to force myself to relearn my real name, my identity. To relearn that this is not all that I am. That I am not just a drunk victim at a frat party found behind a dumpster, while you are the All-American swimmer at a top university, innocent until proven guilty, with so much at stake. I am a human being who has been irreversibly hurt, who waited a year to figure out if I was worth something.
My independence, natural joy, gentleness, and steady lifestyle I had been enjoying became distorted beyond recognition. I became closed off, angry, self-deprecating, tired, irritable, empty. The isolation at times was unbearable. You cannot give me back the life I had before that night either. While you worry about your shattered reputation, I refrigerated spoons every night so when I woke up, and my eyes were puffy from crying, I would hold the spoons to my eyes to lessen the swelling so that I could see. I showed up an hour late to work every morning, excused myself to cry in the stairwells, I can tell you all the best places in that building to cry where no one can hear you, the pain became so bad that I had to tell my boss I was leaving, I needed time because continuing day to day was not possible. I used my savings to go as far away as I could possibly be.
I can’t sleep alone at night without having a light on, like a five year old, because I have nightmares of being touched where I cannot wake up, I did this thing where I waited until the sun came up and I felt safe enough to sleep. For three months, I went to bed at six o’clock in the morning.
I used to pride myself on my independence, now I am afraid to go on walks in the evening, to attend social events with drinking among friends where I should be comfortable being. I have become a little barnacle always needing to be at someone’s side, to have my boyfriend standing next to me, sleeping beside me, protecting me. It is embarrassing how feeble I feel, how timidly I move through life, always guarded, ready to defend myself, ready to be angry.
You have no idea how hard I have worked to rebuild parts of me that are still weak. It took me eight months to even talk about what happened. I could no longer connect with friends, with everyone around me. I would scream at my boyfriend, my own family whenever they brought this up. You never let me forget what happened to me. At the of end of the hearing, the trial, I was too tired to speak. I would leave drained, silent. I would go home turn off my phone and for days I would not speak. You bought me a ticket to a planet where I lived by myself. Every time a new article [would] come out, I lived with the paranoia that my entire hometown would find out and know me as the girl who got assaulted. I didn’t want anyone’s pity and am still learning to accept victim as part of my identity. You made my own hometown an uncomfortable place to be.
Someday, you can pay me back for my ambulance ride and therapy. But you cannot give me back my sleepless nights. The way I have broken down sobbing uncontrollably if I’m watching a movie and a woman is harmed, to say it lightly, this experience has expanded my empathy for other victims. I have lost weight from stress, when people would comment I told them I’ve been running a lot lately. There are times I did not want to be touched. I have to relearn that I am not fragile, I am capable, I am wholesome, not just livid and weak.
I want to say this. All the crying, the hurting you have imposed on me, I can take it. But when I see my younger sister hurting, when she is unable to keep up in school, when she is deprived of joy, when she is not sleeping, when she is crying so hard on the phone she is barely breathing, telling me over and over she is sorry for leaving me alone that night, sorry sorry sorry, when she feels more guilt than you, then I do not forgive you. That night I had called her to try and find her, but you found me first. Your attorney’s closing statement began, “My sister said she was fine and who knows her better than her sister.” You tried to use my own sister against me. Your points of attack were so weak, so low, it was almost embarrassing. You do not touch her.
If you think I was spared, came out unscathed, that today I ride off into sunset, while you suffer the greatest blow, you are mistaken. Nobody wins. We have all been devastated, we have all been trying to find some meaning in all of this suffering.
You should have never done this to me. Secondly, you should have never made me fight so long to tell you, you should have never done this to me. But here we are. The damage is done, no one can undo it. And now we both have a choice. We can let this destroy us, I can remain angry and hurt and you can be in denial, or we can face it head on, I accept the pain, you accept the punishment, and we move on.
Your life is not over, you have decades of years ahead to rewrite your story. The world is huge, it is so much bigger than Palo Alto and Stanford, and you will make a space for yourself in it where you can be useful and happy. Right now your name is tainted, so I challenge you to make a new name for yourself, to do something so good for the world, it blows everyone away. You have a brain and a voice and a heart. Use them wisely. You possess immense love from your family. That alone can pull you out of anything. Mine has held me up through all of this. Yours will hold you and you will go on.
I believe, that one day, you will understand all of this better. I hope you will become a better more honest person who can properly use this story to prevent another story like this from ever happening again. I fully support your journey to healing, to rebuilding your life, because that is the only way you’ll begin to help others.
Now to address the sentencing. When I read the probation officer’s report, I was in disbelief, consumed by anger which eventually quieted down to profound sadness. My statements have been slimmed down to distortion and taken out of context. I fought hard during this trial and will not have the outcome minimized by a probation officer who attempted to evaluate my current state and my wishes in a fifteen minute conversation, the majority of which was spent answering questions I had about the legal system. The context is also important. Brock had yet to issue a statement, and I had not read his remarks.
My life has been on hold for over a year, a year of anger, anguish and uncertainty, until a jury of my peers rendered a judgment that validated the injustices I had endured. Had Brock admitted guilt and remorse and offered to settle early on, I would have considered a lighter sentence, respecting his honesty, grateful to be able to move our lives forward. Instead he took the risk of going to trial, added insult to injury and forced me to relive the hurt as details about my personal life and sexual assault were brutally dissected before the public. He pushed me and my family through a year of inexplicable, unnecessary suffering, and should face the consequences of challenging his crime, of putting my pain into question, of making us wait so long for justice.
I told the probation officer I do not want Brock to rot away in prison. I did not say he does not deserve to be behind bars. The probation officer’s recommendation of a year or less in county jail is a soft time-out, a mockery of the seriousness of his assaults, and of the consequences of the pain I have been forced to endure. I also told the probation officer that what I truly wanted was for Brock to get it, to understand and admit to his wrongdoing.
Unfortunately, after reading the defendant’s statement, I am severely disappointed and feel that he has failed to exhibit sincere remorse or responsibility for his conduct. I fully respected his right to a trial, but even after twelve jurors unanimously convicted him guilty of three felonies, all he has admitted to doing is ingesting alcohol. Someone who cannot take full accountability for his actions does not deserve a mitigating sentence. It is deeply offensive that he would try and dilute rape with a suggestion of promiscuity. By definition rape is the absence of promiscuity, rape is the absence of consent, and it perturbs me deeply that he can’t even see that distinction.
The probation officer factored in that the defendant is youthful and has no prior convictions. In my opinion, he is old enough to know what he did was wrong. When you are eighteen in this country you can go to war. When you are nineteen, you are old enough to pay the consequences for attempting to rape someone. He is young, but he is old enough to know better.
As this is a first offense I can see where leniency would beckon. On the other hand, as a society, we cannot forgive everyone’s first sexual assault or digital rape. It doesn’t make sense. The seriousness of rape has to be communicated clearly, we should not create a culture that suggests we learn that rape is wrong through trial and error. The consequences of sexual assault needs to be severe enough that people feel enough fear to exercise good judgment even if they are drunk, severe enough to be preventative. The fact that Brock was a star athlete at a prestigious university should not be seen as an entitlement to leniency, but as an opportunity to send a strong cultural message that sexual assault is against the law regardless of social class.
The probation officer weighed the fact that he has surrendered a hard earned swimming scholarship. If I had been sexually assaulted by an un-athletic guy from a community college, what would his sentence be? If a first time offender from an underprivileged background was accused of three felonies and displayed no accountability for his actions other than drinking, what would his sentence be? How fast he swims does not lessen the impact of what happened to me.
The Probation Officer has stated that this case, when compared to other crimes of similar nature, may be considered less serious due to the defendant’s level of intoxication. It felt serious. That’s all I’m going to say.
He is a lifetime sex registrant. That doesn’t expire. Just like what he did to me doesn’t expire, doesn’t just go away after a set number of years. It stays with me, it’s part of my identity, it has forever changed the way I carry myself, the way I live the rest of my life.
A year has gone by and he has had lots of time on his hands. Has he been seeing a psychologist? What has he done in this past year to show he’s been progressing? If he says he wants to implement programs, what has he done to show for it?
Throughout incarceration I hope he is provided with appropriate therapy and resources to rebuild his life. I request that he educates himself about the issue of campus sexual assault. I hope he accepts proper punishment and pushes himself to reenter society as a better person.
To conclude, I want to say thank you. To everyone from the intern who made me oatmeal when I woke up at the hospital that morning, to the deputy who waited beside me, to the nurses who calmed me, to the detective who listened to me and never judged me, to my advocates who stood unwaveringly beside me, to my therapist who taught me to find courage in vulnerability, to my boss for being kind and understanding, to my incredible parents who teach me how to turn pain into strength, to my friends who remind me how to be happy, to my boyfriend who is patient and loving, to my unconquerable sister who is the other half of my heart, to Alaleh, my idol, who fought tirelessly and never doubted me. Thank you to everyone involved in the trial for their time and attention. Thank you to girls across the nation that wrote cards to my DA to give to me, so many strangers who cared for me.
Most importantly, thank you to the two men who saved me, who I have yet to meet. I sleep with two bicycles that I drew taped above my bed to remind myself there are heroes in this story. That we are looking out for one another. To have known all of these people, to have felt their protection and love, is something I will never forget.
And finally, to girls everywhere, I am with you. On nights when you feel alone, I am with you. When people doubt you or dismiss you, I am with you. I fought everyday for you. So never stop fighting, I believe you. Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining. Although I can’t save every boat, I hope that by speaking today, you absorbed a small amount of light, a small knowing that you can’t be silenced, a small satisfaction that justice was served, a small assurance that we are getting somewhere, and a big, big knowing that you are important, unquestionably, you are untouchable, you are beautiful, you are to be valued, respected, undeniably, every minute of every day, you are powerful and nobody can take that away from you. To girls everywhere, I am with you. Thank you.
